Description

Atlas Platinum PTC500 — a center-post changer that never touches the rim edge

The Platinum PTC500 is a center-post tire changer, and that single design decision is the reason to look at it rather than another rim-clamp machine. Instead of jaws that grip the rim from the outside, the wheel is secured through its own center bore by a post that runs up through the middle of the turntable. The clamping load lands on the hub face, not on the lip of a painted or polished alloy, which is why shops running expensive wheels keep coming back to this style.

Atlas then removed the part of center-post work that people complain about. On a conventional center-post machine you thread a cone down the post by hand for every wheel, or you maintain a pneumatic locking circuit that has to be kept alive. The PTC500 uses a “Smart Lock” system: the wheel goes on, a lever flips, and it is locked. That is the whole procedure. Dual assist arms and an integrated wheel lift handle the weight, so the operator is positioning the tire rather than carrying it.

Will It Fit Your Shop?

The PTC500 is a floor machine with two hard requirements, and both are on you rather than on us.

  • Power: a 110-volt supply. There is no three-phase conversion to arrange and no transformer to buy.
  • Compressed air: 120–145 PSI from an external supply. The bead breaker and the jaws are air operated, so a compressor that cannot hold the top of that band will make the machine feel slow long before anything actually fails. The air supply is not included with the changer.
  • Floor and delivery access: the crate weighs 885 lb. Plan how it comes off the truck and how it crosses the shop floor before it arrives.

The wheel and tire envelope decides whether it fits your work, which is the question that actually matters. Clamping range is 12" to 30", maximum tire diameter is 47", and maximum wheel width is 15". That covers passenger cars, light trucks, most modern SUV and pickup fitments, and the oversized wheel packages that arrive on lifted trucks. Confirming that your heaviest-selling fitment sits inside those three numbers is the customer’s responsibility, and it is a five-minute check worth doing before you order.

Lever or no lever, decided per wheel

Most shops are split between technicians who trust a bar and technicians who want nothing touching the bead. The PTC500 does not force the choice at purchase. The mount/demount head works with a conventional tire tool, or the machine runs leverless with no hand tool at the bead at all. A shop can run leverless on low-profile and soft-sidewall work and switch to the bar on a stubborn commercial-pattern light-truck tire without changing machines or training two separate procedures. The head is metal with replaceable plastic inserts, so the wear part is a consumable rather than a rebuild.

Bead breaking and bead seating, the two jobs that stall a bay

The air-operated bead breaker develops 6,924 lb of force. That number matters on corroded steel wheels and on tires that have sat mounted for years, where an underpowered breaker turns a two-minute job into a fifteen-minute argument. At the other end of the operation, the external flexible bead-blasting system delivers a burst of air around the outside of the tire to seat a stubborn bead, which is the step that most often defeats a shop with a plain inflator.

The turntable rotates at 7 RPM. A moderate, consistent table speed is deliberate on a center-post machine: the operator has time to watch the bead track over the head rather than reacting to it, and torque is applied progressively instead of snatching at a tire that is not yet lubricated.

Perfect For

  • High-volume tire shops that see a wide spread of wheel diameters in a day and cannot afford to lose a bay to one difficult fitment.
  • Wheel and performance specialists handling polished, chromed and painted alloys where a rim-edge mark is a redo, not a scratch.
  • General repair shops adding tire service, where the integrated wheel lift and assist arms let one technician work a heavy assembly alone.
  • Fleet and municipal shops running light-truck and van fitments inside the clamping and diameter limits above.

What’s in the Box

Atlas ships this as a working package rather than a bare machine. Included: the dual assist arms, the wheel lift, a filter/regulator/lubricator, a tire tool, a lube bucket with brush, and multiple plastic protectors. Replacement parts and wear items are stocked. The external air supply is not included — that is the one thing you must already have.

Certification, stated plainly

Atlas does not publish a third-party safety listing for this changer, and we are not going to imply one. Tire changers are not covered by the North American third-party listing programme that applies to vehicle lifts, so there is no equivalent certificate to look for and no dealer can honestly show you one. What that means in practice: if your insurer, your franchise agreement or a local inspector has written a specific equipment-listing requirement into your paperwork, read the requirement and confirm it applies to wheel service equipment before you order. If we learn of a listing for this model we will say so here rather than leave it ambiguous.

Shipping and delivery

This machine moves by freight only, within the lower 48 states. Freight is quoted live at checkout for your address, so the figure you see is current rather than a number baked into a page months ago. You must be able to take the crate off the truck — a forklift, a loading dock, or a scheduled terminal pickup where you collect it yourself. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee. When the truck arrives, walk the crate before you sign: note any crushed corner, tear or shift on the bill of lading at the point of delivery. A signed clean BOL is the carrier’s evidence that the machine arrived intact, and it is very hard to unwind afterwards.

Warranty

The Platinum range carries a 2-year parts-only warranty on this changer. Parts only means exactly that: Atlas supplies the replacement part, and labour is not covered. If something fails, contact us before you take the assembly apart. A disassembled unit is difficult to assess and a claim opened after a teardown is routinely refused, so the fastest path to a part is a phone call first and a wrench second.
