Description

BelAire 318VL 7.5 HP 80-Gallon Two-Stage Air Compressor, Vertical Tank

The reason to choose the 318VL over its horizontal equivalent has nothing to do with the air it makes and everything to do with the floor it occupies. Standing the 80-gallon receiver on end shrinks the machine's claim on your shop from a long wall run to a footprint of roughly 39" by 24". In a two-bay building where every square foot of floor is either a car or a walkway, that is the difference between a compressor you can site sensibly and one you end up putting somewhere it should not be.

Everything above the floor is serious equipment: a 7.5 HP single-phase motor with a magnetic starter already fitted, a belt-driven two-stage pump built with solid cast iron, stainless steel valves, and a receiver that BelAire states is 100% factory tested at full pressure to a 175 PSI maximum.

The footprint argument, in practice

Vertical compressors get bought for corners. A 39" by 24" base tucks against a wall, behind a door swing, at the end of a bench run or in the dead space beside a roll-up door, and it does not force you to give up a whole wall the way a long horizontal tank does. It also puts the pump, the belt guard, the sight glass and the pressure switch at roughly chest height instead of down at ankle level, which makes the routine checks something you will actually do rather than something you keep meaning to.

The trade is stability and reach. A tall, narrow machine has a higher centre of gravity, so it wants a flat and solid floor and it should not be nudged around with a pallet jack once it is positioned. And the top of the unit is above head height, so leave yourself a way to reach the pump for oil and belt service without standing on something improvised.

Height: measure your ceiling, and read this first

Published figures for the overall height differ: the product overview supplied with this model gives 77"; our specification database records 73". The gap is large enough to matter — it is the difference between clearing a low garage door track or a duct run and not clearing it.

If ceiling height, a door header, a mezzanine or a duct is anywhere near marginal in your space, confirm the overall height with us in writing before you order and we will get it straight from BelAire's current data sheet. Whichever figure applies to your unit, add clearance above the machine for the air outlet, any piping elbow and the ability to actually work on the pump. The two floor dimensions are settled: 39" and 24" on the floor, and 479 lbs.

Vertical tanks and water: the one habit that matters

Every compressor makes water. Air is compressed, it heats, it cools in the tank, and the moisture it was carrying condenses and collects at the bottom of the receiver. A vertical tank concentrates that water in a small area at the base, directly under the air column, which is good news for draining it and bad news if you never do.

The 318VL uses a manual tank drain: a valve you open yourself. It is simple, there is nothing in it to fail, and it puts the responsibility on you. Left undrained, standing water attacks the receiver from the inside where you cannot see it, and it eventually carries through into your air lines and your tools. Draining it at the end of a working day, while there is still pressure to push the water out, takes seconds and is the single highest-value maintenance habit on any compressor in this class.

Power and installation

The 318VL runs on 208-230V single-phase supply, which is what makes it viable in buildings with no three-phase service at all. A 7.5 HP motor on single phase draws substantial current, and BelAire's recommendation for this machine is a 60 amp breaker. Confirm you have the panel capacity and a free slot of that size before ordering rather than after.

BelAire does not publish a single amp-draw figure and instead lists it as something to confirm with a certified electrician, which is the correct answer given how much depends on your service, your conductor run and your local code. Having that checked is the customer's responsibility. The magnetic starter is included in the price and factory fitted, so the motor gets proper overload protection and you are not buying a starter as a separate line item.

Perfect For

  • Small and mid-sized workshops where floor area is the binding constraint and wall space is already spoken for.
  • Two-bay service shops that need commercial output without surrendering a parking space to the compressor.
  • Buildings with single-phase supply only, where a three-phase machine is simply not an option.
  • Home and collector garages with a panel that can carry a 60 amp circuit and a corner to spare.

In the box

  • Two-stage belt-driven pump, solid cast iron construction
  • Stainless steel valves
  • 80-gallon vertical ASME certified air tank, 100% factory tested at full pressure
  • 7.5 HP single-phase motor with magnetic starter included
  • Start-stop pressure switch control
  • Oil level sight glass
  • High-flow belt guard, fully enclosed
  • Pressure gauge and manual tank drain valve

Not supplied: an air dryer. Note also that a low oil shut-off is not listed as fitted to this model, so the sight glass is your only warning.

One figure we will not publish

We do not have a delivered-air rating for the 318VL that we are confident enough to print. The sources we hold state the airflow figure inconsistently, and an airflow number is exactly the kind of specification a buyer sizes a tool list against. Rather than publish a figure that might be wrong, we have left it out. If delivered air at 100 PSI is decisive for you, ask and we will obtain it from the manufacturer in writing before you order. Everything else on this page comes straight from the manufacturer's own specification for this model.

Certification, honestly

The receiver is an ASME certified vessel and BelAire states it is 100% factory tested at full pressure. That is a real claim about the tank and it is the one the manufacturer makes.

What we do not hold for this machine is a North American third-party electrical safety listing issued by an accredited testing laboratory. That is a separate assessment covering the electrical side, and a pressure vessel certification does not substitute for it. Insurers, corporate facility policies and local electrical inspectors sometimes require it specifically. If that applies to you, establish the requirement and ask us in writing before you buy rather than discovering it during an inspection.

Delivery

Shipped as freight within the lower 48 states, free of charge.

Arrange the unload in advance. You need a forklift or a dock at the delivery point, or you can take terminal pickup and collect it yourself. Residential deliveries are available and carry a residential fee. Because this one ships standing tall on a skid, pay particular attention on arrival: check the crate for tipping or lean, look for dents in the tank, distortion in the belt guard and oil on the deck. Write any damage onto the delivery paperwork and photograph it before the driver leaves. Signing clean and complaining later almost never works.

Warranty

The 318VL carries a 2-year factory warranty. Keep the invoice and write down the serial number when the machine is uncrated, because a claim without it is slow.

Do not dismantle the pump, motor or pressure switch before a claim has been opened, however obvious the fault looks. Taking a component apart to prove it failed is the surest way to lose the cover on that component. Report it first, then follow the manufacturer's oil, belt tension and tank draining schedule from the first week of ownership.
