BendPak TSP-580V-601: an American-built pump that turns at 625 RPM

The number that explains this compressor is not its horsepower. It is 625 RPM — the speed the pump turns, against a motor running at 1,750 RPM. BendPak gears the Patriot Series down deliberately, and everything people like about this machine follows from that one decision: it is quieter (72 dBA), it runs cooler, the wear per hour is lower, and it does not need to shout to fill an 80 Gallon tank. Slow-running cast-iron pumps are what industrial compressors did before the market discovered it could sell noise as power.

The second thing worth knowing is where it comes from. The TSP-580V-601 is engineered and manufactured in the USA, which on a machine you expect to keep for fifteen years is mostly a statement about parts and support being reachable rather than a flag on a box.

The pump, in detail

It is a two-stage, twin-piston design with 100% cast-iron pump and heads. Cast iron matters here for a specific reason: it does not warp under sustained heat the way an aluminium cylinder with a pressed-in sleeve can, and this unit is rated for a continuous duty cycle, so sustained heat is the normal condition rather than the exception. The cylinders are finned all the way around, giving 360° cooling, and a forced-air fan on the balanced flywheel pushes air across them.

Lubrication is full-pressure, not splash — an oil pump feeding the bearings rather than oil being flung around the crankcase. Combined with tapered roller main bearings and needle-type piston pin bearings, that is a bottom end built for hours rather than for a spec sheet. The crankshaft is oversized ductile iron and counterbalanced, the cylinders are precision honed for oil control, and the connecting rods are die-cast aluminium alloy to keep reciprocating weight down.

Valves are the heavy-duty disc type, and they are reachable: you can service them without pulling the cylinder head or dismantling the compressor piping. On a machine that will be in your shop for a long time, the maintenance you can actually perform is worth more than the maintenance the brochure promises you will never need.

Air, and how dry it is

The pump is rated at 17 CFM, measured at 175 PSI, which is also its maximum working pressure. Note that rating point — it is quoted at full pressure rather than at a friendlier low figure, so it is a more honest number than it first looks.

A built-in intercooler sits between the stages and a forced-air aftercooler sits on the discharge, so compressed air is chilled twice before it reaches the tank. That is the difference between water condensing in your tank, where a drain deals with it, and water condensing in your air line, where it ruins finishes and rusts tooling. An electronic drain valve is fitted to the tank. Integrated unloader valves in the intake assembly bleed head pressure so the motor is not fighting compressed air every time it restarts.

Will it fit, and will it run?

This is a vertical 80 gallon machine, so it wants floor area about the size of a pallet and a good deal of headroom. One thing to settle before you plan the space: the published specification sheet lists more than one set of overall dimensions for this model. Ask us for the current dimensioned drawing before you build a pad, cut a pipe run or commit to an alcove, and we will get it from BendPak in writing.

Weight is listed at 676 lb, and the machine ships upright on a pallet.

Power is 1-Phase on a 208-230V, 60 Hz supply, with a 40 Amp breaker recommended. Single-phase is the reason a lot of shops end up here: it is a genuinely industrial compressor that does not require three-phase service. A magnetic starter is not fitted to this model, so factor that into the electrical scope. Have a licensed electrician confirm the supply, size the circuit and set the disconnect. Anti-vibration pads are included — four thick elastomer pads that resist oil, water and ageing — but a level, solid floor is still the customer's responsibility, as are the electrical connection, permits and inspection.

BendPak lists this compressor as UL, CSA and ASME certified. That combination is worth understanding rather than skimming: the ASME rating covers the pressure vessel and its safety valve, while the other two are third-party safety listings covering the machine as a product. Very few compressors in this size class carry all three, and if your insurer, your local inspector or a corporate safety policy asks for third-party listed shop equipment, this is one of the models that can answer the question. Pickup and delivery

BendPak pickup can be arranged from Santa Paula, California and Theodore, Alabama if you would rather collect than take a delivery — call us to set it up. Otherwise the compressor ships by freight to the lower 48 states, upright on a pallet.

You must be able to unload it. A forklift or a dock is ideal; a pallet jack works if the truck can get close and the ground is hard and flat. If neither is realistic, take terminal pickup and bring a trailer — it is often the smoother option on a machine of this height. Residential deliveries carry a residential fee, which is quoted with your shipping at checkout.

Before you sign anything, inspect it. Check the tank, the enclosure, the gauge and the belt guard, and write any damage on the delivery receipt while the driver is still there. A clear signature makes a later freight claim close to impossible to win.

Warranty

This unit is covered by BendPak's factory warranty; the warranty document that ships with the compressor is the controlling text and states the term and what it covers, so read it on arrival rather than after a failure. We have not put a warranty period in this description because the data supplied for this model does not state one, and we are not prepared to guess at a number you might one day rely on. One rule that applies to every compressor: do not disassemble the pump, motor or electrical components before a claim has been opened and the manufacturer has had the chance to inspect. Taking it apart first is the most common way a valid claim gets denied.
