Description

Challenger 44050X Heavy-Duty 4-Post Chain-Driven Lift

A four-post lift holds a vehicle by its tires. That is what makes it quick — drive on, raise, work — and it is also its one structural limitation, because anything involving the wheels, the brakes or the suspension needs the vehicle held by something other than the tires. On this 50,000 lb model that gap is closed by optional rolling jacks rated from 15,000 lb to 35,000 lb, and understanding how they change the lift is the most useful thing a buyer can do before ordering.

Why a Drive-On Lift Needs Jacks

On a two-post the vehicle is held by its frame, so the wheels hang free from the moment it leaves the ground. On a four-post the wheels carry the load, and everything attached to them is compressed under it. Brake work, wheel-end service, suspension inspection, tire rotation on a heavy chassis — none of it is possible until the axle is picked up off the runway.

Rolling jacks do exactly that. They travel along the runways, position under the axle or frame, and lift that end clear while the rest of the vehicle stays supported. The result is a machine that does fast drive-on work all day and converts to wheel-free service in a couple of minutes — for a shop with one heavy bay, the difference between a lift that handles most jobs and one that handles all of them.

Matching the Jack to the Axle

The jack options span 15,000 lb to 35,000 lb, and the spread exists because the number that matters is the axle load, not the gross vehicle weight. A tandem drive group under a loaded vocational body can put far more on a single axle than a casual reading of the vehicle's weight suggests, and a jack chosen against gross weight divided by the number of axles will be the wrong jack.

Work out the heaviest axle you will actually pick up, then choose. It is also worth deciding this before the lift is installed, for a physical reason: with rolling jacks fitted, the usable spacing between the runways is 43″ to 53.5″, against 36″ to 58″ without them. Jacks bought later can therefore mean re-setting a lift that was commissioned to a different spacing.

Runways Built to Be Driven On

The runways are 32″ wide and diamond-plated, with diamond-plate approach ramps, and they sit 14″ high. On a heavy four-post the runway is a road surface first and a support structure second — the driver of a high-cab truck cannot see the runway edge for the last few feet of the approach, and traction on a wet or oily tire is what stops the vehicle stepping sideways at the ramp. The anti-skid pattern serves the technician walking the deck afterwards just as much.

Power, Locks and Control

Lifting is by dual heavy-duty cylinders under lever control, so the front and rear can be raised in synchrony or fed independently when a vehicle carries its weight unevenly. Ten lock positions across the 40K–60K models give a choice of working heights, and a single-point air-actuated release disengages all four column locks at once.

Will It Fit?

Maximum wheelbase is 430″ — the top of this family's 310″ to 430″ range, so of the heavy four-posts here this is one of the two that will take the longest chassis. Measure hub centre to hub centre on your longest regular vehicle, not bumper to bumper, and then measure bumper to bumper anyway to check the vehicle fits the building.

Overall length is 46 ft, with 410″ between the columns. Overall width is 17 ft 1.25″ and there is 144″ between the inside faces of the columns. Overall height is 92″, and maximum rise at the top of the runway is 73″ — so the ceiling must clear the runway height, the full rise and the tallest vehicle, with working room above that, measured to the lowest obstruction in the bay rather than to the roof.

The motor is listed at 15HP, three-phase, on a supply range topping out at 460V. That is a three-phase installation and it should be priced and confirmed with an electrician before the lift is ordered, not after. Two figures we do not hold for this model and will not estimate: a shipping or overall weight, and a concrete thickness and slab strength. Ask us for Challenger's foundation specification before any slab work is planned, and ask us for the shipping weight before you arrange offloading. Confirming ceiling, floor area, slab and electrical supply is the buyer's responsibility.

Perfect For

  • Heavy truck shops doing wheel-end and brake work, where the jacks are not an accessory but the point.
  • Fleet maintenance operations with one heavy bay that has to cover both quick service and wheel-free jobs.
  • Long-wheelbase work up to the 430″ figure above.

What's in the Box

Supplied: diamond-plate anti-skid runways and approach ramps, dual lift cylinders with lever controls, column locks with single-point air-actuated release, and black columns, which is the only colour offered. Rolling jacks are an option and are not included — despite being the reason this page is written the way it is. If wheel-free work is why you are buying, order them together with the lift so the runway spacing is set correctly at installation.

Certification, Stated Plainly

Nothing in our data for this lift records an independent third-party safety listing, and we are not going to suggest otherwise. It is worth being blunt about why that matters here rather than treating it as small print: a recognised third-party listing is a condition of installation or use under some insurance policies, many fleet and public-sector safety standards, and some local codes.

If one of those applies to you, get us the requirement in the exact words your insurer, safety officer or inspector used, before you order, and we will put it to Challenger. A five-minute conversation now beats an argument about a delivered lift later.

Shipping and Delivery

Freight to the lower 48 states, free of charge.

Plan the offload properly. Columns, runways, ramps and the power unit arrive as separate very heavy pieces, and taking them off the trailer is the receiver's job, not the driver's. You will need lifting equipment rated for it, firm ground to set the pieces on, and enough space that the truck is not held on site all day. Because we do not hold a published weight for this model, ask us for it before you book equipment rather than sizing a forklift from a guess. If your site cannot handle the offload, terminal pickup is the alternative. Residential delivery is offered and carries a residential fee, applied at checkout when selected.

Inspect and count everything before signing. Match the piece count to the paperwork, look for bent flanges, gouged runway plate, damaged ramps and shifted loads, photograph anything suspect, and write it on the bill of lading in ordinary language. Signing clean says the shipment arrived complete and undamaged, and that is extremely hard to walk back on freight like this.

Warranty

The manufacturer's warranty applies, and our claims process is on the warranty claims page of this site. We do not restate the term or the covered parts in the description, because the document supplied with the lift is what a claim is settled against and a paraphrase here would eventually be wrong. Ask us for the current document before you order and we will send it.

The standing warning on every lift we sell: leave a suspect component assembled until the claim is open. A cylinder, lock or power unit that has already been taken apart cannot be inspected for the cause of the failure, and that is a routine and legitimate reason for a manufacturer to decline. Photograph the fault, record what the lift was doing and what was on it at the time, and call us before anything is dismantled.
