Description
Challenger Lifts CL4P9W — the wide-column 9,000 lb four-post storage lift
The CL4P9W is the wide-bay member of Challenger's CL4P9 four-post range, and the letter on the end of the model number is the entire reason to choose it. Inside the columns the CL4P9W measures 110", appreciably more than the narrower models in the same family. On a lift that spends most of its life holding one car in the air above another, that width is not a comfort feature. It decides whether you can open a door on the vehicle up top without catching a column, and whether a wide-track truck sits centred on the runways instead of crowded to one side.
Everything else is the CL4P9 range as Challenger builds it: 9,000 lb of capacity, commercial-grade formed runways, adjustable lock ladders, a single-point manual lock release, and no compressed air anywhere in the cycle. One caution — the Product Features list further down describes the whole CL4P9 family and quotes its best-case figures. The numbers below belong to the CL4P9W.
Will It Fit?
A four-post lift is one of the few purchases where a tape measure saves more than a discount. Confirming the bay, ceiling height, door opening and slab condition is the buyer's responsibility, and it needs doing before the freight is booked.
- Footprint: 233.5" overall length by 127.25" overall width.
- Across the bay: 110" inside the columns, with 184.75" between columns front to back.
- Column height: just over 8'. This is a tall four-post, and a low residential ceiling rules it out.
- Recommended bay: Challenger gives a minimum recommended bay size of 11' x 22'.
- Drive-through width: 6.65'.
- Runways: 20" wide, set 38" apart, sitting 7" above the floor at the lowest position.
- Longest vehicle: 179" maximum wheelbase.
- Power: single-phase, 115v or 230v, driving a 1HP or 2HP motor depending on how the lift is configured.
Two vertical figures matter and they are not interchangeable. In the top locked position the CL4P9W offers up to 85.5" of service rise to the top of the runway, and up to 80" of clearance beneath for storage. The clearance answers "will my other car fit underneath?"; the rise is what you add your vehicle's height to when planning the ceiling.
What the extra width actually buys you
Width on a four-post is spent in three places. The first is door swing: on a narrower lift the driver's door of a full-size vehicle can meet a column before it is properly open. The second is centring — runways set 38" apart suit most cars, but a wide-track pickup parked slightly off line on a narrow lift leaves a tyre close to the runway edge. The third is you, walking a wheel or a jack between a column and a parked vehicle.
The trade is worth stating plainly: at 127.25" overall width the CL4P9W needs a wider bay than the narrower models in the range. If your garage is the constraint, buy the narrower version. If your vehicles are, buy this one.
Locks, lock ladders and no air line
Challenger uses adjustable lock ladders on this range, and the reason is the least glamorous fact on the spec sheet: real garage floors are not level. Fixed locks have to be shimmed until all four columns agree; adjustable ladders take that difference up in the mechanism, so the runways sit true and all four locks engage together.
Lowering runs through a single-point manual lock release that disengages both column locks at once. Where each column releases separately, a technician walks the perimeter dropping locks in sequence, and a lift part-way off its locks is doing something you would rather it did not. One handle, one motion.
The CL4P9W needs no compressed air to operate. That reads like a footnote until you cost the alternative in a home garage: a compressor, a line run to the lift, and tank pressure to maintain before you can raise anything. Here the requirement is an electrical circuit.
The runway rail system, and what it lets you add later
Built into the runways is an accessory rail — the reason a storage lift can become a service lift without being replaced. A rolling jack drops onto it so a wheel lifts clear of the runway for brake or tyre work, and oil drip trays slide into the same channel to keep the vehicle below clean. Both are sold separately and neither needs the lift modified.
Most CL4P9W buyers start with parking in mind and discover a year later that a car at chest height is a car they want to work on. Buying the rail with the lift is cheaper than wishing for it later.
Perfect For
- The home garage with wide vehicles — full-size pickups and long-wheelbase SUVs.
- Collector storage — two cars in one bay, with room to open a door on the upper one.
- The light-duty professional bay — Challenger positions this range for light-duty general service, not heavy repair.
- Dealership and fleet storage — where floor space is fixed and the vehicle count is not.
What's in the Box
You receive the complete CL4P9W four-post lift — columns, formed runways, crossbeams, lock ladders, the hydraulic power unit and the single-point release, in Challenger's powder coat. The colour listed for this model is black.
Rolling jacks and oil drip trays are the accessories Challenger names for this range, and both are sold separately. Anything else — casters, extension kits, extra ramps — confirm with us in writing before you order.

Certification, stated plainly
Challenger lists this range as ALI/ETL certified, and adds a point that is genuinely unusual and worth understanding: anchoring is not required to maintain that certification. Most four-post lifts either must be bolted to the slab or lose their listing if they are not. Being able to leave this one unanchored — or to relocate it later — without voiding the listing is a real advantage for a leased building, a garage with radiant floor heating, or anyone who does not want holes in a finished slab.
That is a paperwork and portability advantage, not a suspension of physics: the slab still has to carry the load and be flat enough for the lock ladders to correct. Have the floor assessed if you are unsure, and if an insurer, inspector or fleet policy sets its own documentation requirement, check it against this model before you buy.
Shipping and delivery
This lift ships by freight to the lower 48 states. This item ships free, so there is nothing to add at checkout.
A freight shipment is not a parcel delivery: you need to be able to take the crate off the truck — a forklift, a tractor with forks, or people and a plan — or collect from the carrier's terminal instead. A residential delivery address carries a residential fee.
Inspect before you sign. Walk the shipment while the driver is there. Note any damage, crushed packaging or missing pieces on the bill of lading before you sign it. A signed clean bill of lading is a statement that the freight arrived intact, and it makes a damage claim considerably harder to pursue afterwards.
Warranty
Warranty runs under Challenger's published terms; our claims process is at mechanicsuperstore.com/pages/warranty-claims. We have not printed a duration because the data we hold for this model does not state one — ask and we will confirm the current term in writing.
One rule applies to every lift we sell: if something fails, stop using it and call us before you take anything apart. Disassembling a component before it has been inspected is the most common way a valid claim becomes a declined one, and photographs of the fault in place are worth more than any description written afterwards.
