Two compressors and two motors sharing one 120 gallon horizontal tank is normally a three-phase proposition, which puts it out of reach of any shop that never had three-phase brought to the building. The specification for the LVR05PDRHS-12 lists it at 208-230, 1PH. The starter panel is the part that makes a duplex a duplex
Two compressors bolted to one tank are not a duplex; they are two compressors that will both try to start at the same moment and fight each other. What makes it a system is the control gear, and this package ships with a NEMA 1 mounted full voltage starter panel containing two starters plus an alternator.
The alternator is the component doing the interesting work. It swaps which machine leads on each cycle, so run hours accumulate evenly across the pair rather than piling onto one unit while the other sits as a spare and quietly seizes from disuse. Even wear means both airends arrive at their service life together, which makes maintenance planning honest instead of a series of surprises. It also means that on a light day one machine covers demand on its own — you are not spinning full capacity to run a blow gun.
And when one half is down for service, the shop still has air. That is usually the whole reason a duplex is specified, and it only holds true if the control gear is designed for it, which is why the panel is worth as much attention as the pumps.
An advanced rotary vane airend with a cast iron core
The pump here is a Champion rotary vane airend with cast iron construction, direct driven at a deliberately unhurried 1760RPM. Direct drive removes the belt: nothing to tension, nothing to glaze, nothing to replace, and no alignment to lose. Slow speed does the rest — the slower an airend turns, the gentler the loads on the vanes, the rotor and the bearings, and the less heat there is to get rid of.
Cast iron matters for the same unglamorous reason it matters in an engine block. It is dimensionally stable when hot, it damps vibration rather than transmitting it, and it wears slowly. On a machine whose entire proposition is running for a long time without drama, that is the right material even though it is the heavy one.
Each motor is a TEFC type — totally enclosed, fan cooled — which is the specification you want in a workshop rather than an office. A TEFC frame keeps dust, grit and moisture out of the windings, and a compressor room is generally the dustiest corner of any building.
Factory-filled lubricant and thermal protection
The machine arrives filled with CS300 vane di-ester lubricant. Two things follow from that. The first is practical: it is filled at the factory, so commissioning does not begin with sourcing the right oil. The second matters more over time — a vane compressor's lubricant is not a generic mineral oil, and a di-ester product is specified because of how it behaves at temperature and how it manages the vane-to-stator contact that a vane machine depends on. Substituting something cheaper at the first oil change is the most reliable way to shorten the life of an otherwise long-lived airend.
Backing that up is high temperature safety shutdown protection. Heat is what actually kills compressors — a blocked cooler, a hot day, a door closed on the compressor room, and temperatures climb until something is damaged. A shutdown on temperature converts what would have been a rebuild into an inconvenient afternoon and a phone call.
Oil carryover is quoted at 3ppm, which is worth checking against what the air is feeding. Spray equipment, pneumatic controls and instrument air all care about it.
Will it fit your shop?
The package is a horizontal tank-mounted unit, 76 in. long, and it weighs 1210 lbs. It needs a flat, solid floor, a delivery route that can take a pallet of that weight, and clearance around it for airflow and service access. Oil capacity is 1 gal and the tank outlet is 1/2 in. NPT.
On the electrical side, do not size the supply from a web page. Have a certified electrician specify the circuit and the protection for the build you are ordering, because a duplex starts two motors and the answer is not simply twice a single-machine figure.
