Champion VR5-8-RS Two-Stage Reciprocating Air Compressor, R-Series

The VR5-8-RS is a two-stage, splash-lubricated piston compressor from Champion's R-Series, and the detail that separates it from the single-stage machines it sits beside is inside the pump: the first-stage piston is aluminium alloy and the second-stage piston is cast iron. That is a deliberate pairing, not a cost saving, and it is the clearest signal on the whole spec sheet that this pump was designed as a two-stage machine rather than adapted into one.

It is a 5 HP unit on an 80-gallon vertical tank, aimed at a shop that wants higher working pressure than a single-stage compressor comfortably delivers and expects the pump to still be running in ten years.

Why two different metals in one pump

In a two-stage compressor the first stage does the bulk compression and the second finishes the job at much higher pressure and temperature. Those two cylinders are not doing the same work, so building both pistons from the same material is a compromise for one of them. Aluminium alloy in the first stage is light, which keeps reciprocating mass and vibration down where the piston is moving the most air. Cast iron in the second stage is heavy, dimensionally stable and tolerant of heat, which is what the high-pressure cylinder needs. The result is a pump balanced across both stages instead of tuned for one — and balance, over years of cycling, is what determines whether the crank bearings and the bores wear evenly.

Between the stages sits an intercooler. Compressing air heats it; compressing already-hot air heats it a great deal more and wastes work doing so. Dropping the temperature between stages means the second stage is compressing denser, cooler air, which is both more efficient and much easier on the discharge valves. It also drops less water into the tank downstream, because a lot of the moisture condenses out in the intercooler rather than in your air lines.

The details that decide how long a pump lasts

The cylinders are multi-finned and cast as an integral cylinder and head. Fins are surface area, and surface area is how an air-cooled pump sheds the heat it makes; a cooler pump is a pump whose oil stays where it should and whose rings stay round. Casting the cylinder and head as one piece removes a gasketed joint at the hottest, highest-pressure point in the machine — one fewer thing to fail, one fewer thing to re-torque.

Compression is handled by two lap-joint rings with a bi-directional seal, which seals in both directions of piston travel rather than relying on pressure to push a ring against its groove one way only. The valves are high-flow disc valves, the crankshaft is balanced, and the main bearings are oversized — three separate choices that all point at a pump expected to run hard rather than intermittently.

A centrifugal unloader gives the machine loadless starting: the pump is vented at rest, so the motor spins up against almost no load and only takes on compression once it is at speed. That is a straightforward way to extend motor and starter life. An oil level sight glass on the crankcase makes checking the oil a glance rather than a job, which in practice is the single biggest factor in whether the oil actually gets checked.

Will It Fit?

The R-Series is sold as a family — base-mounted or tank-mounted, tanks from 30 gallons up to 240 gallons — so plan around the configuration you are actually ordering. This listing is the 80-gallon vertical tank.

  • Footprint and height. Overall length is 35" and overall height is 75". It is a tall machine; check your ceiling, your lighting and anything mounted on the wall behind it before you commit to a corner.
  • Weight. 590 lbs on sound, level concrete. A vertical tank concentrates its weight on a small number of feet.
  • Air connection. The tank outlet is 3/4". Match or exceed it in your shop piping.
  • Power. The motor is 5 HP and the recorded supply is 230V. The phase is one of the things to confirm with us before ordering — see the note below.
  • Service clearance. Leave room to reach the sight glass, the drain and the belt guard. A compressor you cannot service easily is a compressor that does not get serviced.

Site preparation, the electrical supply and the disconnect are the buyer's responsibility, and the electrical work should be signed off by whoever holds the licence for it.
