Description

Chicago Pneumatic QRS3.0HP-3: the smallest step into continuous-duty air on three-phase power

There is a size of workshop that needs air all day but does not need a lot of it at once — a one- or two-technician bay, a fabrication corner, a wheel and tyre operation. That shop is normally sold a piston compressor, and it spends the next five years listening to it labour. The QRS3.0HP-3 is the alternative: 3 HP of rotary screw rated 100% duty, delivering 8.5 CFM at 150 psi at 61 dBA, on 208-230/460 Volt three-phase supply.

The defining figure is the duty rating, not the horsepower. This machine has no rest cycle to respect. Where a piston unit of comparable output has to stop and cool — and drops your line pressure while it does — the screw airend keeps turning for as long as the shop draws air. Small does not mean intermittent here.

Sizing it honestly: what 8.5 CFM runs, and what it does not

An air rating is only useful next to a list of tools, so here is the plain version. 8.5 CFM at 150 psi comfortably supports intermittent hand-tool work — impact wrenches, ratchets, blow guns, tyre inflation, a die grinder used in bursts — for one or two people working steadily.

What deserves more thought is anything that consumes air continuously rather than in bursts: sustained sanding, media blasting, or a spray gun running for long stretches. Those draw at a constant rate and will out-consume a machine of this size if you plan optimistically. The correct method is boring and reliable: add up the consumption of the tools you will genuinely run at the same time, then compare. Send us the list and we will check it against this model before you order rather than after the pallet has arrived.

Being deliberately clear about that is more useful to you than a page implying this compressor does everything. It is a well-built machine for a defined job.

Confirm the dryer before you order

Published entries for this machine differ: the feature list states an integrated air dryer, while a separate specification field records the dryer as not fitted. Both are given here, attributed, so nothing rests on the version that reads better.

Get it settled before you order, because it changes both the price and the plumbing. Ask us and we will confirm the dryer configuration of the specific unit we would ship, in writing. If no dryer is fitted, downstream air treatment is easy enough to add — but only if you know it needs adding before you commission the installation.

Three-phase, an approved panel, and a certified receiver

The supply requirement is the first hurdle and the one nobody can engineer around after delivery: this variant is built for three-phase service. If your building has single-phase only, this is the wrong model and no wiring arrangement fixes it.

What you get in return is a motor that runs cooler and starts more gently than its single-phase equivalent — three-phase power arrives in overlapping cycles instead of pulses, so torque is smooth and starting current is easier on the supply. On a machine designed to run continuously, cooler running is directly a longevity argument, because heat is what ages windings.

Two supporting specifications are worth reading precisely rather than skimming. The control panel is approved by UL and cUL: that covers the electrical control gear, which is what an electrician and, in some jurisdictions, an inspector will look at. The receiver is an ASME/CRN tank, which is the pressure-vessel side of the machine. The motor itself is a TEFC Baldor — totally enclosed and fan cooled, from a manufacturer with a parts and service network, which is the right answer for a motor living in dust and aerosol.

Will It Fit? Supply, space and siting

Confirming power, floor and ventilation before the machine ships is the buyer's responsibility. Settle the first line before anything else.

  • Electrical supply: 208-230/460 Volt, 3 Phase. Give the figures and the nameplate to your electrician early; conductor size and protective device follow the connected voltage, the length of the run and local code.
  • Tank: 60 Gallon, horizontal, ASME/CRN. Horizontal keeps the package low, which matters under a mezzanine, a low ceiling or a door track.
  • Footprint: overall length 56.3". Overall width and height exist in our data as unitless numbers, and we do not publish a measurement we cannot state the unit for. Ask us if the footprint governs the installation.
  • Weight: 397 lbs. Level, solid floor — an unevenly supported machine loosens its own fittings over a season.
  • Tank outlet: 1/2". Size the shop main from that, not from whatever you are replacing.
  • Ventilation: the sound enclosure that gives you 61 dBA also traps heat. Provide airflow around the machine and a way for warm air to leave the room.

Perfect For

  • Small three-phase workshops that need air continuously rather than in short bursts.
  • Fabrication and maintenance corners inside larger buildings, where a quiet machine can sit near the work.
  • Shops replacing a tired piston compressor and wanting the duty cycle rather than a bigger tank.
  • Buyers who want serviceable, named components rather than an anonymous package.

What's in the Box

A complete mounted package: the rotary screw airend and TEFC Baldor motor inside the low sound enclosure, on the 60 Gallon ASME/CRN horizontal tank, with the UL and cUL approved control panel and start/stop control.

The dryer is subject to the confirmation above. Regardless of that answer, these are not supplied: electrical installation and the circuit itself, downstream filtration, shop pipework from the 1/2" outlet, and the authorized start-up described under Warranty. Anything your order depends on being in the crate, ask us to confirm in writing first.

Without an electronic drain, condensate removal is a manual weekly habit. It costs a minute and it is the job most often forgotten, right up until the receiver pays for it.

Approvals, described rather than badged

The two approvals above are genuine and specific: control gear, and pressure vessel. Neither amounts to a third-party safety listing of the packaged compressor as a whole, and we will not blur the two together to make the page look stronger.

The distinction only matters to some buyers, but it matters a great deal to them. Insurers, fleet standards and certain local inspectors ask for independent listing documentation on hard-wired plant, and a manufacturer's own declaration is not that document. Installation to local electrical code remains your electrician's responsibility. If you work to a requirement of that kind, tell us before you order and we will establish in writing what this model can actually evidence.

Shipping and delivery

Palletised freight to the lower 48 states, priced live at checkout against the address you enter rather than estimated from a zone chart.

Decide how the pallet comes off the truck before you commit. 397 lbs means a forklift, a dock, or a pallet jack on level ground; the driver is not equipped to lower it for you and is not expected to. No handling equipment on site? Take terminal pickup and collect from the carrier. Delivery to a home address is a residential delivery and carries a residential fee.

Inspect it before you sign anything. With the driver still there, check the enclosure, receiver, control panel and fittings, and write any damage or missing item onto the bill of lading. A signature with no note on it says the freight arrived perfect, and unwinding that later is very hard.

Warranty

A 5 Year warranty is available on this machine where an authorized start-up is performed. This product's listing directs buyers to contact us for the detail rather than publishing terms, so ask us and we will put the current warranty conditions and the cost of commissioning in writing while you are still choosing.

Commissioning is worth buying for its own sake. A rotary screw checked at first start for rotation direction, oil level and control settings by someone who does it every week rarely develops the faults that get argued about later.

If something does go wrong, stop the machine, isolate the supply and contact us before any part of it is opened. Once an airend has been taken apart, establishing what failed first becomes guesswork and the claim becomes very difficult. Photograph the fault as found and leave the unit assembled.
