Description
Lanair XT250 Waste Oil Heater — Value Package 2
Every waste oil heater sold is sold on the same promise: the fuel is free because you already have it. The promise is real, and it is conditional. It holds only if the shop actually collects the oil cleanly, keeps the wrong fluids out of the tank, and stores enough of it to get through a cold snap. This page is about that side of the purchase, because it is the side that decides whether the heater pays for itself or becomes an expensive lesson.
The unit is the XT250: 250,000 BTUH, a listed heating area of 8,500 square feet, and a fuel input of 1.79 GPH, packaged here with a chimney kit.
What it will burn
The specification names used crankcase oil up to 50 weight — conventional or synthetic — used synthetic oil, used automatic transmission fluid, and used #1 and #2 fuel oil, which is to say diesel. For a general repair shop that covers essentially the whole drain barrel, and for a fleet garage it covers the transmission service work too.
The weight limit is the part people skim. Up to 50 weight is a real boundary, not a suggestion: heavy gear oils and some hydraulic fluids sit outside it, and feeding them to a burner tuned for a lighter fuel is how a nozzle fouls. If a large share of your waste is gear oil, say so before you order and we will check whether the unit suits your stream.
What must never go in the tank
Solvent. Brake cleaner. Antifreeze. Gasoline. Parts-washer fluid. Water. Every shop eventually has somebody who decides the used-oil tank is a general drain, and that person will cost you a burner and possibly a chamber. The practical defences are dull and they work: a single labelled collection point, a fine screen on the fill, and a rule that anything not on the accepted list goes in a separate drum. A heater that only ever sees clean drain oil is a heater that starts every time.
Storage, and the cold-snap problem
Consumption is listed at 1.79 GPH while the burner fires. Through a genuinely cold week with the heater running most of the day, that adds up faster than a shop expects, and running out mid-January is the classic first-season mistake. Work out how much you can hold, and how much you generate in a month, before you decide the tank you have is big enough. Our product data for this package does not state a tank size — if the package you are looking at is meant to include one, ask us and we will confirm against the current Lanair packing list rather than have you infer it.
The heater itself
The cabinet is fine-grained galvanized and specified rust-resistant, which matters in the humid, cold-overnight buildings these units live in. The fan is mounted inside the cabinet to reduce shop noise. Adjustable locking louvers let you aim the discharge down a bay and keep it there. The combustion chamber is 10-gauge cold-rolled steel — thickness where the scraping happens.
Chimney kit contents
Cut for a 16 ft eave: one chimney cap, one 24" Class A chimney pipe, one storm collar, one roof flashing for 0/12-6/12 pitch, one 36" Class A chimney pipe, one finishing collar, one 14" slip connector, four 24" black pipe sections, one black tee pipe with cap, one roof support bracket, one 90 degree elbow. Check your own eave height and pitch against those before ordering.
Will it fit?
Cabinet dimensions are 47" x 46" x 36" (length x width x height). The unit hangs, so the structural check comes first and it belongs to the customer: confirm the roof structure or wall steel can take the load and that the connection points are sound.
Power is 120 V-60Hz, 20 Amps. Compressed air is 2 CFM at 15-18 PSI, continuously while the burner runs — that is a duty cycle a small compressor will feel, and the air should be dried and filtered. Venting is 8" Class A chimney from the top or the side. Chimney termination height, clearances to combustibles and permit requirements are local-code matters and are the buyer's to verify.

| Hanging weight | Two conflicting figures — see below |
The weight figures disagree. The spec table on this page states one hanging weight and our own product record for the same package states a lighter one. We are not going to average them or quietly publish the friendlier number. If the hanging weight feeds a structural calculation — and on a suspended appliance it should — ask us and we will confirm it against Lanair's current documentation before you order.
Perfect for
- Independent repair shops — the drain barrel is the fuel supply, and this unit takes what is in it.
- Transmission and driveline specialists — used ATF is on the accepted list.
- Fleet garages — one collection point, one appliance, two budget lines eliminated.
- Shops of roughly 8,500 square feet — capacity matched to the building.
Certification, stated as it is
Lanair states its units are UL listed. That claim is on this product's current page and we are repeating it as the manufacturer's claim rather than as our own testing.
A listing is about the appliance, not your building. Local mechanical code sets clearances, chimney termination and combustion air, permits and inspections vary by jurisdiction, and insurers and fleet policies sometimes require documentation before a fuel-burning appliance goes in. Confirm the requirements locally before you buy; if you need current documentation, ask and we will obtain it.
Shipping
Freight, lower 48 states, crated on a pallet. Delivery is to your address and unloading is the customer's responsibility — a forklift or a dock, or terminal pickup, which is available on every freight order we ship. A residential address carries a residential fee, applied at checkout.
Inspect the crate before the driver leaves. Damage goes on the bill of lading, in his presence, with photographs. Once you sign a clean receipt the carrier's position is that the shipment arrived intact.
Warranty
Coverage is the manufacturer's; ask us for the warranty document for this model if you want the terms before ordering. Standing advice for every brand we carry: do not disassemble a part before claiming on it. Photograph the fault as found and open the claim at our warranty claims page.
