Lanair XTD200: the ductable one

The D in XTD200 is the whole point of this model, and the specification table on this page is where it shows up. Ductable option: yes. Chimney location: top and left side. Cabinet depth 56" against a hanging weight of 523 lbs. This is not a standard XT cabinet with a different badge — it is a bigger, heavier machine built so the heat can be taken somewhere other than the spot it hangs in.

That matters if your building is not one open room. A suspended heater with louvers throws heat in the direction you aim it, and that is fine for a single bay. It is no use at all if you need warmth in a parts room, a wash bay and an office off the same appliance. Ducting is what solves that, and on this model it is a listed option on the specification rather than a modification.

What ducting actually changes

Three practical consequences worth knowing before you commit.

The layout stops dictating the heat. With ductwork you place the appliance where it can be serviced and flued conveniently, and deliver the air where people are working. Without it, the heater has to hang where the heat is wanted, which is often the least convenient point in the building for a flue run and a fuel line.

The install gets bigger. Duct is an additional design job — runs, registers, static pressure — and it is not supplied here. Budget for it and, if the building is at all complicated, get someone who does this for a living to size the runs. This is the part people underestimate.

The flue has options. Chimney location is listed as top and left side, so the stack can leave upward through a roof or sideways toward a wall penetration. Combined with a duct plenum, that usually means the cabinet can go where it is easiest to live with.

Will It Fit?

• Cabinet: 24" high x 40.5" wide x 56" deep, per the specification table's H x W x D listing. That depth is the number to check — it is the longest of the XT cabinets, and a position that suits a shorter unit may not take it.
• Structure: 523 lbs hanging weight before any ductwork is added. Whether your purlins, joists or beam will carry that is a question about your building and it is yours to answer, ideally with someone qualified to say so.
• Electrical: the power supply row lists two 120 V legs. Read that carefully when you plan the install: it is not the single circuit the smaller cabinets take.
• Compressed air: 2 CFM at 12-15 PSI delivered to the burner. Small, but continuous, so it has to be piped rather than improvised.
• Flue: 6" Class A pipe, top or left side.
• Service access: leave working room. The burner is designed to be removed and the collector box to be reached from the side; a unit installed tight into a corner is a unit that does not get cleaned.

Confirming all of the above against the real building is the buyer's responsibility, and it is much cheaper to do with a tape measure than with a return.

Built to be opened and cleaned

Waste oil is not refined fuel, and everything downstream of the burner is going to need attention on a schedule. The XTD200's design accepts that instead of ignoring it. It has a hinged combustion chamber door that swings open for clean-out rather than a panel that has to be unbolted and wrestled, and a large side-access panel to the collector box, which is where the residue actually collects. The burner is designed to be removed easily for bench work.

Three more details on the XT-D models are worth naming because they are the sort of thing you only appreciate in year three. A non-continuous spark transformer, which only fires the ignition when it is needed rather than running constantly. An hour meter, so servicing can be scheduled on actual running time instead of guesswork — and so a warranty conversation has real numbers in it. And a prime switch, which makes bleeding fuel through after a filter change or a dry tank a deliberate operation rather than a fight.

The combustion chamber itself is 12 gauge CRS: heavy cold-rolled steel, used where the flame is.

Fuel: 100% used synthetic included

The headline fuel claim on this unit is that it burns 100% used synthetic oil. That is not a small point. Synthetic drain oil is an increasing share of what a modern shop pulls out of engines, and older waste oil appliances that were happy on conventional oil have not always been happy on a tank that is entirely synthetic.

Alongside that, the specification lists used crankcase oil up to 50 wt, used automatic transmission fluid, and #1 and #2 fuel oil — so the unit will also run on ordinary diesel or heating oil when the used-oil supply runs short in a cold spell. Rated heat range is 200,000 BTUH over a heating area of 5,000 sq. ft., at a fuel input of 1.4 GPH.

What is not on that list stays out of the tank: gasoline, solvent, antifreeze, brake fluid and paint waste are not waste oil, and contaminated fuel is the most common reason a burner will not stay lit.

• Multi-room shops — bays plus a parts room, wash bay or office — where one hanging heater cannot reach everywhere.
• Buildings with awkward flue routes, where being able to exit the stack sideways decides the install.
• Fleet and municipal garages with a steady, largely synthetic used-oil stream.
• Dealership service departments already handling used oil as a tracked waste.
• Larger agricultural and equipment shops covering around 5,000 sq. ft.

Certification, and what we can and cannot tell you

The product data we hold for this model does not record a third-party safety listing, and we are not going to imply one. Lanair's own copy on other units in this range does make a listing claim; this record does not repeat it, and the difference is worth a question rather than an assumption.

Why it can matter: a used-oil burning appliance and its flue are usually a local permit matter, and some insurers and fleet policies specifically ask for the listing document before they will cover an installation. If that applies to you, ask us to confirm the listing status in writing before you order, not after the unit is hanging from your roof structure.

Shipping and Delivery

This ships as freight within the lower 48 states, free of charge. Two decisions to make first. Unloading is the customer's: at 523 lbs plus crating, this needs a forklift or a dock, or you arrange to collect it from the carrier's terminal. And delivery type matters — residential delivery is a separate service and carries a fee, so tell us which you need up front. On arrival, inspect the crate before signing: note any damage on the bill of lading immediately, photograph it, and hold on to the packaging. A clean signature is very difficult to walk back.
