Always unplug your pump from the power source before performing maintenance. An impeller change is the perfect time for a deep clean.

1. Soak the Pump: Disassemble the pump and place the pump body, impeller cover, and old impeller parts (if you're trying to salvage them) in a bucket. Create a 50/50 solution of water and a pond-safe descaler (like CLR or simple white vinegar).
2. Wait: Let the parts soak for 12 hours or more. This will dissolve the tough mineral and calcium buildup (the white, crusty deposits) that chokes performance.
3. Scrub: After soaking, use a soft brush (an old toothbrush works perfectly) to scrub away any remaining softened sludge or deposits from the pump housing and impeller well.
