This is the 460V build of Quincy QT MAX 15 HP two-stage piston package, and the reason to look at it ahead of an ordinary tank-and-pump machine sits quietly at the end of the feature list: the aftercooler is fitted at the factory. A reciprocating compressor pushes out hot, wet air. Cool that air before it reaches the receiver and most of the moisture drops out as condensate instead of travelling down your lines into an impact wrench, a plasma torch or a spray gun. On most machines in this class the cooler is an accessory you buy and plumb in later. Here it is part of the compressor, working alongside a high-efficiency finned intercooler between the two compression stages.
Why a slow pump lasts longer
The motor turns at 1750 RPM. It is an easy number to skim past, and it is the strongest single predictor of how long a piston compressor will live. A slower crankshaft means lower piston speed, cooler rings and bores, and fewer wear cycles for every cubic foot of air the machine makes. Quincy rates this splash-lubricated cast-iron pump at more than 50,000 hours of pump life, and the unhurried shaft speed is how that figure is earned rather than merely claimed. It also changes the noise: still loud, but a lower and steadier loud than a high-speed unit shrieking in the corner of a shop.
The pump is cast iron with an aluminum head: iron for the rigidity that holds bore tolerance as the casting heats and cools through a working day, aluminum on top because the head is where heat has to leave. Splash lubrication suits a slow, heavy pump — the crank throws oil across bearings and bores every rotation, with no oil pump to fail and nothing to prime.
The parts that stop it destroying itself
Three protective devices are standard, and each addresses a specific way that compressors die. A low oil cut-off switch shuts the motor down before the pump can run dry, which is the failure that turns a repairable machine into a replacement one. A magnetic starter provides thermal overload protection, dropping the contactor out when the motor pulls more current than it should; a bare pressure switch cannot do that, and on a three-wire motor a lost leg will cook windings in minutes without one. An automatic tank drain deals with the condensate that pools in the bottom of the receiver, because water is what rusts a tank from the inside and a manual drain nobody remembers to open is how a receiver eventually fails inspection. Plan the space around service access rather than to the last inch: you want room at the pump end for the belt guard, the oil sight glass and the filter, and enough clearance around the cooling fan that it is drawing shop air rather than recycling its own exhaust. Air leaves through a 1-inch tank outlet, which is a genuinely large port, sized for hard pipe rather than for a hose reel.
Power is the part that decides this purchase. This build is wired for 460V 3-phase service. That is an industrial supply: it cannot be run from a domestic panel, it cannot be adapted with a plug, and a rotary converter is an engineering decision rather than a shopping one. The magnetic starter is included. Breaker and conductor sizing is not published by Quincy because it depends on your service and your run length, and the manufacturer instruction is to consult a certified electrician, which is the right answer. Confirming your supply, your door width and your floor space before ordering is the buyer responsibility — a freight carrier will not take a 923 lb compressor back because it would not pass the roller door.

Check the tank drain before you order
Published descriptions of the tank drain differ. The manufacturer feature list and the specification table both give this unit an automatic electronic tank drain; a separate product data field records it as not fitted. If the automatic drain matters to your installation, ask us to confirm it before your order ships — we will get it in writing from Quincy.
Certification, Stated Plainly
The specification sheet for this compressor records ASME, UL and CSA marks, and it is worth being precise about what they cover. The ASME mark is a pressure vessel certification: it applies to the receiver, its design, its material and its construction. That is the one an insurer or a workplace inspector will look for on a tank this size, and it is the one that matters most. The electrical marks cover motor and control components. None of them certifies the quality of the air the compressor produces, none of them replaces the periodic pressure vessel inspection some jurisdictions require, and none of them stands in for a permit if your local authority wants one for a receiver of this capacity. Check the local rules before installation rather than afterwards.
Shipping and Delivery
This compressor moves by freight to the lower 48 states; it is far past what any parcel carrier will handle. This item ships free, so there is nothing to add at checkout. Two practical points follow from that. You must be able to get the machine off the truck at the delivery end — a forklift, a dock or a telehandler — or you can arrange to collect it from the carrier terminal instead. And delivery to a residential address is handled differently by carriers and carries a residential fee, so pick the option that matches the real destination when you order.
Inspect the pallet before you sign for it. Walk around it looking for a bent guard, a cracked gauge, oil on the wrapping or a receiver that has taken a knock on one corner, and write whatever you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there. A clean signature makes a freight damage claim very hard to win. A noted one makes it routine.
Warranty
Quincy covers this compressor with a 1-year factory warranty, and that extends to the 3-year No Bull warranty when the unit is registered with Quincy and maintained with Quincy kits. Register on delivery rather than when a fault appears, because the extension depends on it. If something does go wrong, do not strip the pump or the starter before you speak to us. A unit that has already been opened is very often a claim that gets declined, and the quickest route to a working compressor is almost always a phone call first.
