There is a trap in this part of the Quincy range and it is worth naming before anything else. The QT Pro 80-gallon two-stage package is sold as several visually identical machines that differ only in two things: whether the receiver stands up or lies down, and what supply the motor is wound for. This one is the horizontal tank on 230 Volt, 3-Phase.

The voltage is not a switch on the side. It is how the motor is built, and it is the single most common reason one of these sits on a pallet for a fortnight waiting for the right unit. Check the panel that will actually feed it — measured, not assumed, and not remembered from the last tenant — before you order.

Two model codes for the same unit

A second thing to settle up front. Two codes are published for this compressor: the title and specification data give 453DS80HCB23, while the manufacturer copy behind this listing gives 253DS80HCB23. If you are matching an existing installation or ordering service parts against a code, ask us to confirm it in writing before you commit — we will have Quincy settle it.

The horizontal layout, and who it suits

Lying the receiver down takes the overall height to about 47" and stretches the footprint to roughly 70" by 23". That is the trade in one sentence: you spend floor to buy headroom. It suits a bay with a low ceiling, a mezzanine overhead, a door track in the way, or a wall run where a long low machine tucks behind a bench and an upright one would not.

It also puts every service point at working height. The sight glass, the belt guard and the drain sit where you can see and reach them, which in practice is the difference between a compressor that gets its weekly check and one that does not.

Site it on a flat, solid, level pad. 660 lbs on four feet finds every high spot in a slab, and a machine that rocks will loosen its own mounts and put vibration through the building. Getting the floor right is the buyer's job and it costs nothing but attention.

What two-stage compression is doing for you

Air enters, gets compressed, passes through a high-efficiency finned intercooler, then gets compressed a second time. Cooling between the stages is the whole point: hot air resists compression, so cooling it first is what lets the pump reach 175 PSI as an everyday working pressure rather than a limit it strains at. It also keeps carbon from baking into the head, which is what shortens valve life on single-stage machines run hard.

The published output is 17.2 CFM at 175 PSI. Note the pair. A flow figure with no pressure attached to it is not a specification, and comparing two compressors on flow measured at different pressures is comparing nothing at all.

Details that decide the service life

Three of them, and none are cosmetic. The connecting rods are two-piece — fewer parts in motion and a straightforward job the day the pump needs attention. The oil reservoir is oversized, which matters for temperature more than capacity: more oil runs cooler and holds its grade longer under continuous work. And the manufacturer states oil carryover under 5 PPM, meaning very little oil mist leaves with the air, which is what you want if the line ever feeds finish work or air tools with tight tolerances.

Low-oil shutdown stops the pump before a lubrication problem becomes a rebuild. Certification, stated plainly

The claims this product's data actually makes are two: the receiver is coded to the American pressure-vessel standard and carries relief valves, and the electrical components are UL and CSA recognised. On a vessel holding 175 PSI the first of those is the one that matters most, and it is a real, checkable claim.

What is not claimed anywhere in the data is an independent safety listing of the finished machine as installed. That is a different piece of paper from a component recognition or a vessel code stamp, and some insurers, fleet policies and local inspectors want it specifically for hard-wired equipment.
