Description

Quincy 451C80VCBM QT MAX — 5 HP Two-Stage, 80 Gallon Vertical, 230V 1-Phase

The line worth pulling out of this machine's own feature list is the one about the pump: a rated life of 50,000 hours or more, backed by a 5 year pump warranty. Manufacturers are careful with pump warranty terms because the pump is the expensive part and the part that gets abused, so a long one is a statement about how the thing is built rather than a marketing flourish. This is a splash lubricated cast iron pump, deliberately slow turning, with an extra-capacity oil reserve and low oil protection — and it is running on ordinary 230V 1-Phase power, which is the other reason this model gets bought.

Around it: a 5 HP industrial motor, an 80 gallon vertical ASME receiver, a factory magnetic starter, a high-efficiency finned intercooler and an air-cooled aftercooler.

Warranty terms — and where our sources differ

This is a case where the page has to say two things at once, so we will say both rather than pick. The feature list states a 1 year factory warranty extending to Quincy's 3-Year "No Bull" cover. The same copy separately states a 5 year pump warranty. Those are not obviously the same promise, and they may well be two different things — whole-unit cover and pump cover often are — but we are not going to average them or quietly print the longer one. Ask us before you order and we will get the current terms in writing from the manufacturer, including exactly what the extension requires.

Also worth confirming: the tank drain. The feature list says automatic tank drain, and the detailed specification block records an electronic drain valve as fitted. A separate specification field says it is not. We cannot resolve that from here, so if a self-emptying drain is part of the appeal, please ask.

Single-phase, and why that is the point

Plenty of workshops have 5 HP worth of air demand and no three-phase supply anywhere in the building. Getting three-phase installed is not a shopping decision, it is a project with a lead time and a bill. This build sidesteps it: 230V 1-Phase, through a factory-fitted magnetic starter that gives the motor thermal overload protection. The motor is an industrial type intended for continuous running rather than a domestic-grade unit asked to behave like one.

Our record does not name a breaker size for this build and instead directs you to a certified electrician. That is the honest answer — single-phase motors of this size draw a substantial starting current, and the correct protective device depends on your cable run and the rest of the board. Get it priced before the machine lands.

Will it fit?

The receiver is vertical, so the floor space is small and the height is the number to check: 37" by 24" on the ground, 74" tall, with headroom above for the pump and to reach the oil fill. Assembled weight is 680 lb. It is the buyer's job to confirm ceiling height, door widths, the route in, floor loading and the incoming supply — all easy to check now and expensive to discover on delivery day.

What makes a pump last

Three things, mostly. Rubbing speed, heat, and oil. This pump addresses all three in unglamorous ways. It turns slowly, which is the single biggest contributor to the 50,000 hour figure. It is cast iron with aluminium heads, so it holds tolerance and sheds heat, with a finned intercooler cooling the air between the two compression stages so the second stage is never compressing hot gas. And it carries more oil than it strictly needs, with a sight glass to check it and a low oil cut-out to stop the machine if it falls — because almost every catastrophic pump failure begins as a slow oil loss nobody noticed.

Two-piece connecting rods reduce the number of moving parts. The air-cooled aftercooler on the discharge side takes the bulk moisture out of the air before it reaches the tank, which protects your pipework rather than the pump, but it is part of the same philosophy: deal with the problem at the machine.

Perfect For

  • Single-phase workshops that have outgrown a small compressor but cannot get three-phase.
  • Independent service and tyre bays running most of the day.
  • Serious home and restoration shops where the machine is expected to last decades.
  • Woodworking and finishing shops that need dry, steady air at 175 PSI.

What's in the Box

A complete assembled machine: cast iron two-stage pump, 5 HP industrial motor, 80 gallon vertical ASME receiver, magnetic starter, high-efficiency finned intercooler, air-cooled aftercooler, extra-capacity oil reserve with low oil protection, and gauges. A refrigerated air dryer is not included — the current copy notes the aftercooler allows one to be used, sold separately — and neither is filtration, pipework, hose or the electrical work.

Certification, stated plainly

Our data claims an ASME receiver and names UL and CSA on the electrical side, and the feature list states the unit is built in the US. That is the full extent of it. We hold nothing describing a third-party safety listing for the assembled machine, and a component approval is a narrower document that should not be read as one. If your insurer or a purchasing standard requires a listing on the complete unit, ask us in advance and we will put the request to the manufacturer.

Shipping and Delivery

Freight only, lower 48, with the rate calculated live at checkout for your address on the day you order. You will need a means of unloading 680 lb from a truck, or you can nominate collection from the carrier's terminal instead. Residential delivery attracts a residential fee, so if the machine is going to a home workshop, factor that in when you compare.

Inspect before signing. Check the crating, the tank, the gauge glass and the starter enclosure while the driver waits, and write anything odd onto the bill of lading. That written note is the whole basis of a later claim; a clean signature removes it.

Warranty

See the section above — there is a 1 year factory warranty, a 3-Year "No Bull" extension under the manufacturer's conditions, and a separately stated 5 year pump warranty, and we would rather you had those confirmed in writing than take our word for how they stack.

Whatever the term turns out to be, the same rule applies as everywhere else: register the claim before the machine is dismantled. A pump that has been opened is generally a pump that is no longer covered.
