Two things separate the RD-18G from a bucket on wheels, and both are about what happens after the oil has stopped running. The first is the telescoping funnel column, which adjusts from 56" to 72" (1,422 mm to 1,829 mm), so the funnel reaches a sump on a vehicle that is up on a lift rather than asking you to bring the vehicle down to the drain. The second is that a pump comes as standard, so the tank empties itself into your waste container instead of needing to be manhandled and tipped.

Those two together describe a specific way of working: drain at lift height, wheel the closed unit to the waste tank, pump it out, wheel it back. Nothing is carried and nothing is poured.

Will It Fit?

The measurement worth taking before you order is the one from your floor to the sump of a typical vehicle at the height you actually work at. If that lands inside 56" to 72", the funnel reaches. If your lift routinely goes higher than the top of that range, the drain will not reach and no accessory fixes it.

Why an upright design, when low-profile drains exist

An upright drain is the correct answer whenever the vehicle is already in the air, and it is the better answer for a shop that does most of its oil changes on a lift. The tall column puts the catchment right under the plug with no crawling and no reaching, the operator stands up throughout, and the tank sits directly beneath the funnel so there is no run of open hose to drip across the floor. A low-profile drain solves the opposite problem — a vehicle that cannot be raised — and if that is your situation, a low unit is what you want instead.

The pump, and why it changes the job

Eighteen gallons of used oil is not something anybody should be tipping. The included pump means the tank is evacuated under control through a hose into a bulk waste container, which removes the two worst moments of an oil change: the lift onto the container rim, and the pour. The easy-pour oil spout is there for simple evacuation when that is more convenient, so you have both routes available depending on how your waste storage is set up.

The tank is translucent polyethylene, and this is a small feature with an outsized effect. You can see the level at a glance from across the bay, so nobody starts a drain that will overflow, and nobody wheels a nearly empty tank to the waste store. A steel tank hides its contents and gets emptied on a guess.

Catching everything, and keeping it clean

The funnel is 18" (457 mm) across with a built-in contamination screen, which does the same job as the drain plug magnet: it holds back the sludge, the old crush washer and the fragments of gasket that would otherwise end up in your waste tank and, eventually, in the pump. A rugged funnel matters because it is the part that gets hit — by a wrench, by a filter, by the vehicle itself when a technician misjudges the height.

Fluid is directed by a non-corrosive telescoping tube and a heavy-duty stainless steel clamp holds the column at the height you set. Stainless on the clamp is the correct specification for the one component that is permanently in the splash path and is repeatedly loosened and re-tightened with oily hands.

Moving it around a busy shop

Four swivel ball-bearing casters and built-in hand grips make this a unit that is steered rather than dragged. Every caster swivelling means it can be placed sideways into a gap between a lift post and a bench, which is where drains actually have to live. At 28 lbs. (13 kg) empty it is light to position, and the wide body is what keeps a tall unit stable once there is liquid in it — the mass of a filling tank sits low, inside a footprint wider than the column above it.

Construction resists dents, rust and corrosion, which for a drain is the whole durability question. It is not a piece of equipment that gets treated carefully, and the failure mode that matters is a tank that has been knocked until it seeps.
