An engine stand that stops occupying the floor the moment the engine comes off it

An engine stand is in use for a few weeks and in the way for the rest of the year. That is the real cost of owning one, and it is what the Ranger RES-1TF is designed around: the frame folds upright, so between projects the stand goes flat against a wall instead of standing in the middle of a bay with a coat hung on it. For a shop where floor space is the scarce resource — and for a home garage where it is the only resource — that changes the arithmetic of owning one at all.

The catch with any folding structure is rigidity, because a joint that moves is a joint that flexes. Ranger's answer is a reinforced neck: the section carrying the whole cantilevered load of the engine is built up rather than left as plain tube. Rated at 2,000 lbs (907 kg) — 1 ton — it takes everything from a compact four-cylinder to a large V8.

Will It Fit?

• Floor space in use. 41″ (1,041 mm) long by 31″ (787 mm) across the front, standing 37.5″ (953 mm) high. Allow working room all the way round it, because you will be walking a full circle as you rotate the engine.
• Storage space. Folded upright it wants wall space rather than floor space. Measure the wall you intend to park it against, and check there is nothing in the way at the height the folded frame reaches.
• Rear width — and a discrepancy worth knowing about. The specification table gives the rear width as 27.5″, and prints 2,210 mm alongside it as the metric equivalent. Those two figures do not describe the same width; the metric conversion in that row is not consistent with the inch figure next to it. We have left the table exactly as supplied rather than silently editing it, and if the rear width is critical to where the stand has to fit, ask us and we will confirm it against the current factory sheet before you order.
• Floor. Four wheels on a hard, flat, level surface. A loaded engine stand on a sloping or broken floor is a genuinely bad idea, and it is not the stand's rating that fails first.

The head, and why 360 degrees is a working feature

The head swivels through a full 360 degrees, and the point is not the number. It is that gravity becomes something you can choose. Rotating the block lets you drop the sump, get square to a timing cover, reach the rear main seal, or bring an awkward accessory bracket to chest height instead of working above your head under a hoist. Fluids drain where you want them to. Fasteners come out downwards rather than into your face. A stand that only holds an engine at one angle turns half of an engine build into a contortion.

A slotted adjustable saddle is what makes mounting practical across different blocks: the mounting arms slide to meet the bell-housing bolt pattern in front of you rather than requiring the pattern to match the stand. Combined with the swivel claw, that is what lets one stand serve a workshop that sees several manufacturers rather than one.

Stability, deliberately over-specified

An engine on a stand is a heavy mass held out on an arm, and its centre of gravity moves every time you rotate it. That is why the base is a four-wheel, wide-base design rather than the three-leg arrangement used on lighter stands: four contact points and a broad footprint resist tipping in every direction, including the diagonal one you create when you rotate a long engine to reach something.

The structure is heavy steel throughout, and the neck reinforcement is the specific answer to the specific weakness — on any engine stand, the neck is where load concentrates, and on a folding stand it is also near the joint. A long rubber-grip handle gives leverage for positioning without a fight, and heavy-duty swivel casters let a mounted engine be moved to the parts washer, the bench or out of the way of the next job.

Working with it safely

Mount the engine with all the bell-housing fasteners the pattern allows, not the two that are easiest to reach, and use the correct grade — the whole load and the whole rotating moment go through those bolts. Drain the oil and coolant before mounting where you can, because a rotating engine with fluid still in it is heavier, messier and less predictable than it looks. Lock the casters before you rotate. And never leave an engine mounted at an angle with the rotation lock disengaged.

Certification, stated honestly

The product data we hold for the RES-1TF makes no third-party approval or independent listing claim, and we are not going to imply one on its behalf. If your insurer, your employer's safety programme or a workshop accreditation requires lifting and holding equipment to carry a specific recognised listing, treat that as an open question and verify it against the manufacturer's documentation before you buy — ask us and we will put the request to Ranger in writing. Regardless of any listing, the load rating assumes a correctly mounted engine on a level floor with the casters locked. Nothing about a stand's rating covers a partial bolt pattern or a sloping surface.

Shipping and delivery

Shipping is worked out live at checkout for your address, so the price you see is the real one. Heavier items travel by freight carrier, and freight delivery is kerbside — you must be able to take the shipment off the truck yourself, or you can arrange to collect it from the carrier's local terminal, which is frequently easier for a workshop or a home address without a dock. A residential delivery carries an additional residential fee, applied once per brand on an order rather than per item. Inspect the shipment before you sign and note any damage on the delivery paperwork at the time — after a clean signature, a damage claim is very difficult to pursue. Delivery is within the contiguous United States.

Warranty

Ranger publishes one warranty document covering its product line and we hold a copy for this model. We have deliberately not printed a term here, because the data we hold does not state one and inventing a warranty length for a product page is worse than showing an honest gap — ask us and we will send you the current document before you order. If any part of the frame, the neck or the folding joint is damaged or distorted, take the stand out of service and contact us before welding, straightening or reinforcing it yourself. A structural repair carried out at your end is normally the end of a claim, and on a component holding a suspended engine it is not a repair worth improvising.
