Description

The anti-lockout ratchet: the one feature you notice on a bad reel every single day

Everybody who has used a cheap retractable hose reel knows the failure. You pull the hose out to its full length to reach the far corner of the bay, the ratchet catches on the last click, and now the reel is locked at full extension with a hose lying across the floor that will not come back until you walk it in by hand. The Ranger RH-50PL is built with an anti-lockout ratchet specifically to stop that: the mechanism will not engage when the hose is fully extended, so the reel cannot lock in the one position where locking is useless.

It is a small piece of engineering and it is the honest reason to buy this reel over a cheaper one. Around it sits a 50′ hose rated to 300 psi with 3/8″ fittings, a fully enclosed multi-position release ratchet, and a frame built with doubled-up structure everywhere the load goes.

Will It Fit?

A reel is a mounting decision before it is a hose decision.

  • Mounting surface. The base measures 7″ x 8″ and is reinforced. It can be mounted to a wall, to the floor or to the ceiling, but in every case it needs to land on real structure — studs, a purlin, a steel beam or a properly engineered bracket. A spring reel loaded with a hose applies a constant torque to its base, and a fixing into plasterboard or a single unbacked sheet will work loose rather than fail suddenly, which is worse.
  • Reach. 50′ of hose, measured from wherever you mount it. Pace out the furthest point you need to reach from the intended position, and remember that a hose routed around a lift column or over a bench uses length you did not budget for.
  • Pressure and fitting standard. The hose is rated at 300 psi and the fittings are 3/8″. Check that against your compressor's regulated output and against the couplers already on your tools, because a shop that runs a different coupler standard will need adapters on day one.
  • Guide arm angle. The guide arm adjusts to nine positions, which is how you point the hose at the work rather than at the wall. Decide roughly where the hose needs to leave the reel before you drill, since the arm setting and the mounting position work together.

Choosing and verifying the mounting point is the buyer's responsibility — it is the one part of this installation that can cause an injury. If you are unsure whether your structure is suitable, ask a builder, not a hose supplier.

Doubled up where the load is

The specification for this reel repeats one word three times, and it is worth reading rather than skimming: dual support leg base, dual support guide arm, dual support axle. Those are the three places a hose reel actually fails.

The axle carries the whole rotating mass and the spring's reaction, and a single-sided axle lets the drum cant over as the bearing wears — which is when the hose starts rubbing the frame. Supporting it on both sides keeps the drum square for the life of the bearing. The guide arm is what the hose drags against thousands of times a year, and a single arm flexes and wears at an angle; a doubled arm holds the rollers parallel so the hose is guided rather than scraped. The leg base is what resists the torque of a fully extended pull. The reel also runs four-direction non-snag rollers, so the hose is guided smoothly whichever way you walk with it, and the axle is specified at 1-3/8″.

The whole assembly is powder coated rather than painted, which is the right finish for something bolted to a workshop wall for a decade with oil mist in the air. The swivel fitting at the inlet is solid brass — brass because it is the connection that turns under pressure for the entire service life of the reel, and a plated pot-metal swivel is the usual place a budget reel starts weeping air.

Air, or water

The reel is rated for both air and water, which quietly doubles what it can be used for. A wash bay, a coolant top-up station or a parts-cleaning point can use the same reel as a tool line. If you intend to run water, plan for it at installation — pick the mounting height and the drainage direction accordingly, rather than converting later.

Perfect For

  • Service bays where the air hose currently lives on the floor and gets driven over — which is the fastest way to destroy a hose and a reasonable way to trip someone.
  • Two-post and four-post lift bays, where a ceiling-mounted reel drops the hose into the middle of the working area instead of routing it around the columns.
  • Wash and detail bays, using the water rating.
  • Home and club workshops with a compressor already installed and no tidy way to store the hose.

What's in the Box

This listing is the reel with its hose: the 50′, 300 psi hose with 3/8″ fittings is supplied, which is the difference between this and a bare reel that needs a hose bought separately. The reinforced mounting base, dual support legs, guide arm and rollers are all part of the unit. Mounting hardware suited to your particular structure is not something we can promise, because the right fixings depend entirely on what you are fixing to — assume you are supplying those. Ask us if you need the packing list confirmed before you order.

Certification, stated honestly

The product data we hold for the RH-50PL makes no third-party approval or listing claim, and we will not imply one on its behalf. That is worth knowing if your workplace has rules about compressed-air equipment: some insurers and some employer safety programmes require pressure accessories to carry a specific recognised approval, and a hose reel bolted over a working bay is exactly the sort of item an inspection notices. Treat the question as open, verify it against the manufacturer's documentation before you buy, and ask us if you want it put to Ranger in writing. Whatever the answer, isolate and bleed the air line before you service, remount or dismantle the reel — a wound spring and a charged hose are both stored energy.

Shipping and delivery

Shipping is priced live at checkout for your own address, so the figure on screen is the real one. Smaller items travel as parcels; anything large on the same order may go by freight carrier instead, and freight is delivered kerbside — you need to be able to take it off the truck, or you can collect from the carrier's local terminal, which many workshops prefer. A residential delivery address adds a residential fee, charged once per brand on an order rather than for each item. Check the packaging before you sign and write any damage onto the carrier's paperwork at the time; a clean signature makes a later claim very hard to win. Delivery is within the contiguous United States.

Warranty

Ranger publishes one warranty document across its product line and we hold a copy for this model. No term is quoted on this page because the data we hold does not state one, and a warranty length invented for a listing is worse than an honest gap — ask us and we will send you the current document before you order. If the spring, the ratchet or the swivel fails, isolate the air and contact us before you take the housing apart. A retraction spring under tension is dangerous to release without the right procedure, and a reel that has been opened is usually outside any claim.
