Description

Ranger RL-8500XLT Combination Disc/Drum Brake Lathe — Super-Duty, with Bench and Standard Tooling

The letters at the end of the model number are the reason to buy this machine. The RL-8500XLT carries an extended-capacity spindle that will true a brake drum a full 10" deep, with a rear bushing location that supports the arbor behind the work rather than leaving it cantilevered. Deep drums are exactly where an ordinary combination lathe runs out — the arbor either will not reach or it chatters when it does — and that single design change is what puts medium-duty truck and older heavy drum work inside this machine's range instead of outside it.

Everything else is a properly specified combination lathe: discs and drums on one machine, on a bench, with the standard tooling package included so it is working the day it is uncrated.

Servo motors instead of a gearbox

Both the spindle drive and the cross feed run on independent precision DC servo motors, rather than through a mechanical transmission and gearbox. That is not a specification-sheet flourish, it is a maintenance decision made on your behalf.

A gear-driven lathe transmits every vibration in the drive train straight to the tool tip, and it protects itself with plastic or bronze shear gears that are expensive and slow to replace when something binds. Removing the gearbox removes both problems: the feed rates become infinitely variable rather than stepped, and there is no shear gear to source. Cross feed adjusts continuously up to 0.010 inches per revolution and spindle feed up to 0.020 inches per revolution (0.25 mm and 0.55 mm respectively), so a roughing pass and a finish pass are a dial movement apart, not a gear change.

Arbor speed is switchable between 150 rpm and 200 rpm in seconds, which is the other half of the same idea — match the surface speed to the diameter and the material instead of accepting whatever the gearing gives you.

The mass, and why it is on the specification

The body is 450-lb. cast iron, bolted to a solid work bench. Metal-cutting accuracy is largely a question of what absorbs the transient vibration a cutting tool generates, and cast iron does that better than fabricated steel of the same weight because of how it damps rather than how strong it is. It is the reason a single-pass finish is achievable at all, and the reason this lathe holds its accuracy across years rather than months.

Supporting that: massive tapered spindle bearings, a hardened and precision-ground spindle that resists grooving, and a splash-lube oil-feed system that keeps a constant flow of oil to the bearings instead of relying on someone remembering a grease gun. Serpentine belts drive it, which run quieter and with less pulsation than a V-belt of the same rating.

Capacity — what it will actually machine

Rotors up to 17" (432 mm) in diameter and 2.5" (64 mm) thick; brake drums from 6" to 28" (152 mm – 711 mm), and 10" deep on this Super-Duty spindle. Hubless drums, rotors with a centre hole from 2-5/32" to 4", and composite rotors with a centre hole from 4" to 6.25", are all covered by the Quick-Change hubless adapter system in the standard package — a spring-loaded arrangement that does away with conventional bell clamps and cones.

Load limits are the number people forget: 150 lbs. (68 kg) on the standard 1" arbor, or 250 lbs. (113 kg) with the optional 1-7/8" truck arbor. Spindle travel is 9-7/8" (248 mm). If your work is consistently at the heavy end of the drum range, order the truck arbor with the machine rather than discovering the limit with a drum already mounted.

Will It Fit?

Required floor space is 53" x 36" (1,347 mm x 914 mm) and overall mounted height is 62" (1,575 mm). Spindle-to-floor height when mounted is 39-1/2" (1,003 mm), which is the figure that decides whether a technician is working at a comfortable height or bending over all day — worth checking against the person who will actually run it.

The motor drive unit runs on 115 – 230 VAC, 50-60 Hz, 1 Ph, 20 amp. Single-phase, ordinary shop power, but a 20 amp circuit is a real circuit: confirm the supply and the breaker before delivery. That confirmation is the customer's responsibility.

It arrives at 730 lbs. (331 kg) with the bench and tools, crated at 46" x 45" x 29" (1,168 mm x 1,143 mm x 736 mm). Plan the route from the truck to the bench position before it turns up.

Perfect For

  • Truck and fleet shops — the deep-drum capacity is the whole point of the XLT.
  • Independent workshops doing their own brake work rather than sending rotors out and waiting.
  • Machine and rebuild shops handling drums, rotors and flywheel surfacing on one machine.
  • High-volume brake specialists where a single-pass finish and a quick drum-to-rotor changeover show up directly in floor-to-floor times.

What's in the Box

The lathe with its bench and the standard tooling package: precision twin cutter tools, the deluxe standard adapter package including the Quick-Change hubless adapter system, a range of adapters covering standard and composite rotors for foreign and domestic cars and light trucks, and the top storage tray for the adapters in daily use.

Optional, not included: the truck adapter kit and the 1-7/8" truck arbor that raises the load limit to 250 lbs.

Certification, honestly

The product data for this lathe makes no third-party safety-listing claim, and we will not put one on the page to round out the section. A manufacturer's own conformity statement and an independent laboratory listing are different documents, and on hard-wired shop machinery some insurers, corporate safety schedules and local inspectors ask specifically for the second.

If that is a condition of your installation, ask us before you order and we will confirm what documentation Ranger issues for this model rather than let you assume something exists.

Shipping and delivery

Crated freight, lower 48 states. This item ships free, so there is nothing to add at checkout.

Sort the unload before you order: the driver's obligation stops at the tailgate, so a forklift, a dock, or a pallet jack on level ground and a second pair of hands is what you want on site for a 730 lbs. crate. No equipment? Take terminal pickup and collect it yourself. A home address is a residential delivery and carries a residential fee. Collection in person is available from the pickup locations listed further down this page.

Inspect before signing. Damage noted on the bill of lading with the driver present is claimable; damage found after a clean signature usually is not — and a bench-mounted machine is easy to knock out of alignment in transit, so look at the crate corners and the bench feet in particular.

Warranty

The Ranger warranty document that covers this lathe is linked in the downloads on this page. The term and its conditions live there, and that document is what a claim is settled against — read it rather than take a summary from us.

One thing we ask, because it protects your claim: if the spindle, a servo motor or the feed develops a fault, leave the machine assembled and call us first. A drive that has already been opened cannot be assessed for what failed and in which order, and that turns a straightforward claim into a long argument.
