Robinair AC1234-4 Recover, Recycle and Recharge Machine for R-1234yf
The AC1234-4 is the machine for a shop that wants full R-1234yf automation and does not want a tablet bolted to the front of it. Instead of a touchscreen it uses large analogue gauges — Ø 100 mm (3.9 in.) — alongside a 4.3-inch graphical LCD. That combination is a deliberate design choice and it earns its space: the gauges are readable from across the bay while the machine is working, they show system behaviour continuously rather than as a sampled number, and they carry on telling you something when the screen is showing a menu.
Underneath, nothing is missing. Recovery is quoted at up to 98.5% with charge accuracy within ±0.5 oz, the service cycle is fully programmable, the refrigerant identifier is integrated, and the machine is specified for both standard and high-voltage hybrid or electric A/C systems.
Fully automatic, or one function at a time
Two modes matter in real work. A complete cycle can be programmed — recovery, vacuum, leak test and recharge — and left to run, which is how a busy bay uses the machine. Or individual functions can be run independently, which is how a diagnostic job uses it: sometimes you want an evacuation and nothing else, and a machine that insists on the full sequence wastes the technician's time and the refrigerant's.
Around that sit the automations that remove interruptions rather than button presses. Automatic internal tank refill keeps the onboard supply topped up so a service does not stall halfway. Automatic air purge clears non-condensable gases from the internal tank without anybody operating a valve. Automatic oil drain measures what came out of the system and displays it, which turns the replacement quantity from an estimate into a measurement — and on a system where oil charge affects compressor life, that is not a small distinction. Programmable vacuum operation adapts the evacuation to the conditions instead of running a fixed timer, which matters on a humid day far more than on a dry one.
The internal cylinder, and the number to plan against
The machine carries a 30 lb DOT tank with 21 lb usable capacity. Those are two different figures for a reason and the second is the one to schedule around: 21 lb is the refrigerant actually available to charge with between refills, and a shop that plans against the tank's rated size will run short sooner than it expects. The oil bottle holds 355 ml (12 oz).
Identification, and why it is built in
The integrated refrigerant identifier samples the charge before recovery begins, and Robinair states it meets SAE J2927. The reason it is inside the machine rather than beside it is behavioural: a separate analyser is an extra connection and an extra step, and extra steps get skipped when the shop is busy. Built into the sequence, the check happens every time. Given that this machine holds and reuses refrigerant internally, a contaminated recovery does not spoil one job — it spoils the internal supply and every vehicle that follows.
Hybrid and EV work, and the oil question
The machine is specified to service both standard and high-voltage A/C systems, including hybrid and electric vehicles. The part that deserves attention is oil handling, because high-voltage compressors require a non-conductive oil and cross-contamination there is an electrical safety problem rather than a lubrication one. The AC1234-4 supports manual oil injection tools for PAG and POE oils — Robinair 18465 and 18470 — so the two oils can be kept properly separate. If you service hybrids and conventional vehicles on the same machine, order the injection tools with it and set the procedure before the first job rather than after.
Flushing with refrigerant instead of chemicals
Liquid refrigerant flushing cleans an A/C system or an individual component using refrigerant rather than a solvent. After a compressor failure has put metal through the lines, that is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that fails again in a season — and unlike a chemical flush there is no residue left in the system to react with the oil afterwards.
