Recovery performance is quoted separately as greater than 95% at 70–75°F in under 30 minutes: that is what it achieves against the clock, at a stated temperature, which is the version that predicts what happens on a Tuesday afternoon with three cars waiting.

We are printing both rather than the flattering one, because a shop planning bay time should plan against the timed figure and a shop comparing machines should compare like with like. If a competing machine quotes only one number, it is worth asking which of these two it is.

The pump and the cylinder

The vacuum pump is 1.5 CFM and dual-stage. The dual-stage part is the one that matters: a two-stage pump reaches a deeper vacuum than a single-stage pump of the same displacement, and depth of vacuum is what actually boils moisture out of a system rather than merely lowering the pressure in it. In a shop where the A/C machine is shared between bays and shifts, that is the practical difference between one person who knows the machine and a team that can all use it correctly.

The specification for this machine lists three: SAE J2843, SAE J2927 and UL 1963. We have reproduced that list exactly and added nothing to it. It is worth knowing what each is for, because they are not interchangeable — the two SAE standards are performance standards for refrigerant handling and for refrigerant identification respectively, while UL 1963 is the equipment standard for refrigerant recovery and recycling equipment. None of the three says anything about who may operate the machine; refrigerant-handling credentials sit with your technicians and are a separate requirement.
