Description

Schulz L-Series 10120HL40X-3 10 HP 120-Gallon Two-Stage Air Compressor (208V 3-Phase)

The single specification that separates this L-Series machine from the V-Series units sitting beside it in the catalogue is one word in the pump section: after-cooler, fitted. The V-Series 120-gallon models do not list one. This one does, and it changes what comes out of your air lines.

Air leaves a two-stage pump hot, and hot air holds water. Push it straight into a receiver and the water condenses in the tank, in the pipe, and eventually in whatever tool or gun is on the end of the hose. An after-cooler drops the air temperature before it reaches the tank, so most of that moisture falls out at the compressor - into the tank drain, where you can get rid of it - instead of travelling down the shop. If you spray, blast, run air-over-hydraulic equipment or supply anything with a tight orifice, that is the difference between a system that needs constant babysitting and one that behaves.

The rest of the machine

Around the after-cooler is a conventional and well-proven package: a 10 HP motor on 208V 3-Phase power, a solid cast-iron two-stage pump on belt drive with Swedish steel valves and oversized main bearings, a magnetic starter mounted and prewired, and a 120-gallon horizontal receiver with a 1" outlet. Maximum pressure is 175 PSI. Lubrication is a splash system with a sight glass, checked by eye - there is no low-oil shutdown on this model.

Voltage: read this before you order

The L-Series pump is sold in more than one supply voltage, and the listings look nearly identical because the machine is nearly identical - the difference is inside the motor. This page is the 208V 3-Phase build. A three-phase motor wound for the wrong supply is not a mistake you can correct on site, and it is not the kind of return anybody enjoys. Before you order, check what your panel actually delivers at the point of connection - not what somebody remembers it being - and if there is any doubt at all, contact us and we will confirm the exact build against the model and serial before it ships.

Will it fit?

It is 78" long, 29" wide and 47" tall, and it weighs 855 lbs. The 47" height is the friendly part of those numbers: it clears a low header, a mezzanine underside or a shelf run that a vertical tank would not. The 78" length is the part that needs planning, both for where it sits and for the route it takes to get there. Measure doorways, corners and any ramp on the way, and account for a pallet under it while it is moving.

Leave service access on the pump side for the sight glass and the belt guard, and keep the drain reachable without crawling - a drain you have to earn is a drain that does not get used. Power is 208V 3-Phase; Schulz refers both the amp draw and the recommended breaker to a certified electrician, and we do the same. Confirming supply, slab and clearance at the installation point is the buyer's responsibility.

What an after-cooler does not do

Worth stating plainly, because it is where expectations run ahead of physics: an after-cooler is not a dryer. It removes a large share of the moisture by cooling the air, but the air leaving it is saturated at its new, lower temperature. If the pipe downstream is colder than the after-cooler outlet - an unheated bay in winter, a run along an outside wall - water will still form. For paint work or instrument air, an after-cooler plus a properly sized drop leg and a downstream dryer is the combination that works. This machine gives you the first of those three as standard, which is the expensive one.

Perfect For

  • Body and paint shops, where water in the line is a redo rather than an inconvenience.
  • Shops in humid regions running long duty cycles through summer.
  • Buildings with a low ceiling or an overhead obstruction that rules out a vertical tank.
  • Facilities already supplied with 208V 3-Phase power.

What is in the box

As stated by the manufacturer: the compressor and its 120-gallon horizontal receiver, the WEG T.E.F.C. NEMA 4 electric motor, an L-Series solid cast-iron two-stage pump, an after-cooler, a magnetic starter mounted and prewired, a pressure gauge, an oil sight glass, notched belts inside an enclosed guard, and powder-coated components. There is no air dryer and no electronic drain valve. Piping, filtration, hose and electrical installation are not included.

Certification, stated plainly

This machine carries the ASME code stamp on its air receiver and safety valve - a pressure-vessel certification, and a genuine one. Be clear about its scope, though. It certifies the vessel and its relief device. It is not a third-party safety listing of the assembled electrical equipment, and it is not evidence for an electrical inspector. Where an insurer, a landlord or a fleet contract specifies a particular listing for powered shop equipment, read the actual clause and check it before purchase; a pressure-vessel stamp is frequently assumed to answer that requirement and frequently does not.

Shipping and delivery

Shipped by freight within the lower 48 states, priced live at checkout for your destination. This is an 855 lb palletised shipment: the truck brings it to you, but unloading is yours to arrange, whether that is a forklift, a dock or collecting the shipment from the carrier's terminal. Deliveries to residential addresses are possible and carry a residential fee shown at checkout. Do the inspection while the driver is still there - open the wrap, look at the tank, the feet and the guard, photograph anything suspect, and write it on the bill of lading before signing. Damage noted at delivery is a claim; damage found the next day is an argument. Pickup for Schulz is at Acworth, GA. Questions by phone, text or chat - 866-774-7743.

Warranty

The unit is covered for 1 year and the pump for 2 years, consumer or commercial. If something fails, open a claim before you open the machine - a stripped pump tells the manufacturer nothing and usually ends the cover. Record the model and serial when it lands, keep the oil-change dates, and hold on to the delivery paperwork; between them they answer almost every question a warranty claim generates.
