TOPDON Hantek AC/DC Current Clamp
This is not a meter. It is a transducer, and that distinction is the entire reason to buy it. A clamp meter is a self-contained instrument with its own display, its own idea of how to average a reading, and no way to show you a waveform. This clamp has no display at all — it converts the current flowing through a conductor into a small voltage signal and hands that signal to whatever instrument you already own. Your multimeter reads it as a number. Your oscilloscope draws it as a waveform. One accessory, and two tools you have already paid for get a capability they did not ship with.
The AC/DC part is the part that matters on a vehicle
A great many inexpensive current clamps read AC only, because AC is the easy case — a changing field is what induces a signal in a simple pickup. Direct current produces a steady field, which needs different sensing hardware entirely, and clamps that can do it cost more for that reason.
Almost everything interesting on a vehicle is DC. Parasitic draw hunting, which is the classic overnight-flat-battery job, is a DC measurement. Starter current draw is DC. Charging system output is DC. Fuel pump current, glow plug current, cooling fan current, injector supply — all DC. An AC-only clamp is useless for every one of them. This one reads both, which is why it lives in a diagnostic kit rather than an electrician's pouch.
Reading current without breaking into the circuit
The other reason to own a clamp is that you never cut anything. Putting a multimeter in series to read current means opening the circuit, which on a modern vehicle can mean unpicking a loom connector, blowing the meter's internal fuse the first time you forget to move the lead, or waking a module that then hides the fault you were chasing. A clamp goes around the outside of the conductor. The circuit never knows you were there, nothing is disturbed, and you can move from one wire to the next in seconds instead of minutes.
For parasitic draw work this is the whole technique: clamp the battery lead, let the vehicle go to sleep, and watch what the current does over time without ever having disturbed the connection you are measuring — because disturbing it is what wakes the modules up and resets the whole test.
Sensitivity, range and bandwidth
TOPDON publishes the clamp's sensitivity as 1 mV/10 mA. On a transducer of this type that figure describes the relationship between the current passing through the jaws and the voltage signal sent to your instrument, which is what allows an ordinary voltmeter or scope input to display current at all. It is also what tells you the scale to set: your instrument is reading volts, and you are interpreting current.
The range is quoted as 650 A, which spans the whole useful automotive spectrum — from the milliamps of a sleeping module's parasitic draw at one end to a starter motor's inrush at the other.
Bandwidth is 400 Hz. Bandwidth is the ceiling on how fast a change the clamp can follow faithfully, and it is worth being clear about what a 400 Hz figure suits. It is aimed at the slow, high-current events on a vehicle: cranking, charging-system behaviour, load testing, fan and pump current, relay and solenoid operation. It is not intended for high-frequency ignition analysis or fast switching work.
