Atlas Platinum PWB50 Premium 2D Computer Wheel Balancer

Most wheel balancers need something you have to keep track of in order to stay accurate: a calibration wheel, or a service visit. The PWB50 carries an NWN — "no wheel need" — system, so it calibrates itself without one, and it is self-diagnosing on top of that. Add the USB hub, which takes firmware updates straight from a PC or notebook, and this is a machine a shop can keep both accurate and current on its own, without waiting on anybody.

That matters more than it sounds. The calibration wheel that shipped with a balancer years ago is, in most shops, somewhere. A machine that cannot be calibrated quietly drifts, and nobody finds out until a customer returns complaining of a vibration at speed.

Around that sits a well-equipped passenger-vehicle balancer built with Italian engineering and components: automatic 2D data entry from a single gauge, an LED display, a full set of alloy weight programs, and a 2 year parts-only warranty.

Will It Fit?

Siting this machine is about as simple as shop equipment gets.

• No anchor-down installation. It does not get bolted to the slab. Position it, use it, move it to another bay later if the layout changes.
• 110volt power. An ordinary single-phase outlet, no dedicated supply and no electrician.
• 230 lbs shipping weight. Heavy enough to need equipment to unload, light enough to move on a pallet jack once inside.
• Wheel envelope: rims 10" to 30" in diameter and 1 1/2" to 20" wide, tires up to 43" in diameter, maximum wheel weight 165 lbs, on a 40mm shaft.

The 40mm shaft is the figure to check first if you already own cones, flange plates or adapters. Confirming your outlet, floor space and route in remains the customer's responsibility, and we are glad to talk it through beforehand.

NWN: Calibration Without a Calibration Wheel

A balancer measures tiny forces and turns them into a weight and a position. Everything it reports depends on the machine agreeing with itself about what zero is, and that agreement drifts — with knocks, with being moved, with a shaft that has taken a bump, with time.

Conventional calibration means mounting a reference wheel of known imbalance and telling the machine what it ought to read. It works, and it depends on that wheel still existing and still being what it was. NWN removes the dependency: the routine runs without a wheel to reference. With the self-diagnosis alongside it, the first thing you do when a result looks wrong is a five-minute procedure at the machine, not a phone call. The USB hub finishes the thought — firmware arrives as a file you copy from a laptop rather than as an engineer's visit.

The Weight Programs, and the Problem Each One Solves

The PWB50 runs a full set of ALU programs including ALU-S, plus three functions that each remove a specific annoyance rather than lengthening a feature list.

• FES — Fast & Easy Split. Divides an adhesive weight in two so both halves hide behind spokes. On a finished alloy, a visible lump of lead is a complaint waiting to happen; splitting it makes the correction disappear.
• OWF / OPF — Opposite Weight, Opposite Position. Moves the application position from twelve o'clock round to six o'clock. Sticking a weight on the top inside of a rim, at arm's length and upside down, is how weights end up badly seated and later fall off; at the bottom you can see the surface, clean it and press the weight home.
• OPTIMATCH. Match mounting — repositioning the tire on the rim so the tire's imbalance and the wheel's partly cancel each other. On an assembly that needs an unreasonable amount of lead, this is the function that fixes the cause instead of adding more correction.

Underneath them sit static and dynamic modes, automatic and pedal-operated brakes, automatic start and stop as the hood is lowered and raised, and a display reading in grams or ounces and millimetres or inches.

What "2D" Means Here, Honestly

Atlas describes the PWB50 as having Automatic 2D Data Entry via a single data entry gauge: one gauge goes to the rim and the machine takes its measurements from it rather than you keying figures off a caliper. The 3D machines further up the Platinum range add further automatic measurement on top.

We will not tell you which individual measurements that gauge does and does not capture: Atlas publishes no such breakdown for this model, and guessing on a page people buy from is not something we do. If that is what your decision turns on, ask us and we will confirm it against the manual in writing before you order.

What is published, and what actually governs the result, is the measuring performance: accuracy to 1 gram, weight position resolution of 1.4 degrees, a 130 RPM balancing speed and a 7 second cycle time, with what Atlas describes as exceptional stability in reading imbalance between the two planes.

Atlas does not publish the individual cone diameters, so we will not state them. The set is the standard passenger and light-truck complement. If you regularly balance an unusual centre bore, ask us to confirm cone coverage before ordering — a short question now, an expensive discovery later. Certification, Stated Plainly

Atlas publishes no independent third-party safety listing for this balancer, and we will not imply one. The distinction is between an outside laboratory that tests a design against a published standard and then audits the factory building it, and a manufacturer that states conformity on its own authority. This machine is sold on the second basis.

For a balancer that is rarely a live question — the listing schemes that carry weight in this trade were written for vehicle lifts, not balancing equipment. Where it surfaces is an insurer, a landlord, or a fleet contract asking for documentation on powered shop equipment generally. If that is you, ask before ordering and we will send whatever the manufacturer publishes.

Shipping and Delivery

Ships by freight carrier within the lower 48, at 230 lbs. Freight is quoted live at checkout against your actual destination rather than as a flat national figure.

Freight is curbside, so unloading is the buyer's job — beyond what two people should lift off a truck bed. Have a forklift, a dock, or a pallet jack and a ramp ready, or take terminal pickup. A home address rather than a commercial one carries a residential fee. Check the pallet before you sign: photograph anything wrong, write the damage onto the bill of lading while the driver is standing there, and keep your copy.

Warranty

The PWB50 is covered for 2 years, parts only: the part is supplied, the labour to fit it is yours.

This is the machine on which that matters least. Run the self-diagnosis and the NWN calibration routine before concluding anything is broken: a balancer shunted across a floor, knocked by a wheel or set on an uneven slab very often just needs recalibrating, and here that is a routine you run yourself with nothing extra to hand. Check the firmware over USB too — some behaviour that reads as a fault is a version behind.

If it is a real fault, leave the machine assembled. Photograph it, note the reported error and the wheel and program in use, and call before anything is opened up. A part that arrives dismantled has lost the evidence the claim depends on.
