Description
Atlas TC221 Rim-Clamp Tire Changer
The TC221 is a rim-clamp, swing-arm tire changer for the shop that mounts tires regularly but not constantly - a small commercial garage, a powersports dealer, a fleet workshop, or a home shop that has outgrown irons and a breaker bar. Its defining feature is a set of adjustable turntable jaws that bolt into three different positions, each with its own published clamping range. That matters more than any other number here, because it is the specification that tells you in advance whether the wheels you actually work on will clamp - rather than finding out with a customer's wheel already on the table.
Three jaw positions, six published ranges
Clamped externally, with the jaws gripping the outside of the rim as you would on most steel and painted wheels, the three positions cover 9 3/4" to 21 5/8", then 10 3/4" to 22 1/2", then 11 5/8" to 23 1/4". Clamped internally, reaching inside the rim as you would on a wide or delicate alloy, the same three positions give 11 5/8" to 23 1/4", then 12 5/8" to 24 1/4", then 13 1/2" to 25 1/4". Moving the jaws is a bolt-position change along the turntable slide, not a tool purchase, so the machine can be set up for a run of unusual wheels and then put back. Overall the changer accepts tires up to 39" in diameter, and the bead breaker handles wheels up to 13" wide.
Not damaging the wheel is the whole job
A tire changer earns or loses its keep on alloy wheels. The turntable jaws take plastic covers so the clamping faces never touch bare rim, the mount and demount head runs either a metal roller or replaceable plastic inserts depending on how precious the wheel is, and the bead breaker shovel has its own plastic cover. The breaker is mounted on the side of the machine and develops 5,500 LB. of force, which is what a bead rusted on through a salt-belt winter actually takes; the electric turntable turns with 885 ft/lbs. of torque, so a stiff sidewall does not stall it halfway round. Those two figures together are the difference between a changer that copes with a bad wheel and one that only copes with an easy one.
Will it fit your shop?
Two services have to be in place before the machine is any use. It runs on 110 volt power, which nearly every shop already has. It also needs compressed air from your own external supply, which is not included: the jaws and the bead breaker are air operated, the working range is 90 to 110 PSI, and the machine MUST NOT EXCEED 140 PSI. That ceiling is not advisory - regulate the line at the machine rather than assuming the shop supply is already inside it, particularly if you run a large compressor with a high cut-out. A filter, regulator and lubricator assembly is supplied to sit in that line.
Allow clear floor for the swing arm to travel and for an operator to walk a wheel on and off, and stand it on flat, solid ground. Confirming your air, your power and the access route from the delivery truck is the customer's responsibility, and a doorway is much easier to measure before the pallet arrives than after.
Assembly is required
We would rather say this on the product page than in an email after delivery: the TC221 arrives needing some assembly. It is not an all-day job and the manual linked lower down this page covers it, but plan for it. Set the time aside, have a second pair of hands for the heavier pieces, and do not book the first customer's wheels for the morning the freight lands.
How it sits in the Atlas range
The TC221 shares its parts and its build with the TC229, with one deliberate omission: no built-in bead blaster, the burst-of-air assist that seats a stubborn tubeless bead. If you regularly fight low-profile or run-flat tires onto tight rims, that assist is worth having and the larger machine is the one to buy. If your work is ordinary passenger, light-truck, ATV and motorcycle rubber, the TC221 does the same job on the same hardware for less outlay - and that is a straight choice, not a compromise.
Perfect For
- The small commercial garage - steady tire work alongside general repair.
- ATV, UTV and motorcycle dealers - small wheels clamp comfortably at the low end of the external range.
- Fleet and farm workshops - where a machine that can be readjusted for an odd wheel beats one that cannot.
- The equipped home shop - anyone running seasonal changeovers across several vehicles who already has air.
What's in the Box
- Inflation gun with gauge
- Filter, regulator and lubricator assembly
- Tire tool
- Lube bucket with brush
- Set of large plastic jaw covers
- Plastic cover for the bead breaker shovel
- Multiple replacement plastic inserts for the mount and demount head
Not included, and worth sorting out before the machine lands: the external air supply itself.
The four numbers that decide it
| Maximum tire diameter 39" | The whole-assembly limit. Check your tallest light-truck tire against it. |
|---|---|
| Maximum wheel width 13" | Measured at the bead breaker - the real constraint on wide rear fitments. |
| Air 90-110 PSI, never above 140 PSI | You supply it, and you regulate it at the machine. |
| Bead breaker force 5,500 LB. | Sized for seized and rusted beads, not only easy ones. |
The complete manufacturer specification table, including every clamping range, is reproduced further down this page alongside the manual and brochure.
Certification, stated honestly
Our product data for the TC221 does not carry an independent North American safety listing, and we are not going to imply one by staying quiet about it. In most shops the question never arises; a tire changer is not lifting equipment. It does arise where an insurer, a franchise agreement or a local inspection regime demands equipment carrying a recognised third-party listing. If somebody has told you that you need such a document, get the requirement from them in writing and talk to us first - we will send you what the manufacturer actually publishes rather than a guess.
Shipping and Delivery
This machine moves as freight inside the lower 48 states at a shipping weight of 500 lbs. You will need a forklift or a dock to take it off the truck, or you can collect it yourself from one of the Atlas warehouse locations listed lower down this page. Delivery to a residential address is possible and attracts a fee; the freight cost itself is quoted live at checkout, because carrier rates move and a figure printed here would be wrong by the time you read it.
Look the shipment over before signing. Check the piece count against the bill of lading, look for a shifted pallet, crushed corners or torn wrap, and record anything you see on the paperwork with the driver present. Once a clean receipt is signed, the carrier's position is that it arrived undamaged, and unwinding that afterwards is slow work.
Warranty
The TC221 carries a 1 Year Parts Only Warranty. Parts only means the covered component is supplied and fitting labor is not - and because Atlas keeps replacement parts and wear items in stock for this line, the usual experience is a part in the mail rather than a machine out of service.
If a component fails, get in touch before you strip it down. An assembly that has already been taken apart is very hard to evaluate, and premature disassembly is the most common way a legitimate claim turns into a dispute. Photograph what happened and leave it alone until you have spoken to us.
