Cold-Water Wheat Germ Food for Goldfish and Koi in Spring and Fall

Koi and goldfish slow their digestion significantly as water temperatures drop below 15°C (59°F). Standard high-protein foods pass through too slowly and can cause intestinal impaction. Hikari Wheat Germ uses wheat germ as its primary ingredient — highly digestible at cold temperatures — so your fish continue to eat safely during spring startup and fall wind-down without the digestive stress that kills fish entering winter in poor condition.

Why Wheat Germ in Cold Water

At water temperatures between 5°C and 15°C (40°F to 59°F), a goldfish or koi's digestive system processes food at a fraction of its summer rate. Wheat germ breaks down faster than animal proteins and grain-heavy formulas, reducing the window for food to ferment in the gut. Feeding Hikari Wheat Germ through these transition months keeps fish eating and maintaining body condition without the risk of constipation or infection heading into winter dormancy.

Feeding

Switch to wheat germ food when water temperature drops below 15°C (59°F) in fall. Feed once daily in amounts consumed within 5 minutes. Stop feeding entirely when water drops below 5°C (40°F). Resume in spring once water holds above 5°C (40°F) consistently. Transition back to regular food gradually as temperatures climb above 15°C (59°F).
