Description

Ranger R980DP-L: two assist arms, not one

Nearly every power-assist tire changer on the market gives you a single assist tower on one side of the turntable. The R980DP-L gives you two. That is the specification this machine is built around, and it is not a marketing count — a second pneumatic assist arm means both the upper and the lower bead can be controlled at the same moment, from two different angles, on the same wheel. On a stiff-sidewall or run-flat fitment that is the difference between managing a tire and wrestling one.

Around that sit a swing-arm layout for access and floor space, a brushless AC drive motor, and a full plastic wheel protector kit supplied as standard rather than sold as an accessory. It is aimed squarely at tire shops and service centres doing volume on modern wheels.

Why the second assist arm changes the job

Think about what actually goes wrong when a low-profile tire is demounted. The upper bead has to be held down in the drop-centre of the rim — the shallow well where the circumference is smallest — while the mount/demount head travels round. If it climbs onto the rim flange instead, the bead is being stretched over its largest diameter, and that is where sidewall damage happens. One assist arm can hold that upper bead. Two can hold it while a second component works the lower bead or steadies the assembly, so nothing has to be improvised with a bar.

The supporting tooling follows the same logic. A traveling drop-centre tool moves with the work and keeps a low-profile or run-flat bead in the well. Bead mount helper rollers stop the bead wandering back out of position once it is set. A tire-handling hook acts, as the manufacturer puts it plainly, as an extra pair of hands for heavy or awkward assemblies — which on a modern light-truck wheel is not a joke.

The swing-arm layout and the space it saves

A swing-arm changer moves the tower arm away laterally rather than requiring clearance for a tilting mechanism, which keeps the working envelope tight and the machine's footprint modest for its capability. Overall product dimensions are 47" L x 60" W x 82" H (1200 mm x 1530 mm x 2090 mm) — measure the height in particular, because the assist arms need their full travel above the turntable and a low ceiling or an overhead heater duct is the sort of thing that gets discovered on installation day rather than before it.

Motor options, and reading the spec sheet honestly

The specification table lists this machine's motor as 208-240 VAC, 50-60 HZ, and the feature list also describes a 110V motor option for shops that want plug-and-play convenience instead of a dedicated higher-voltage drop. Both appear in the manufacturer's own data. Because the model designation and the motor rating are the sort of thing that gets transcribed inconsistently between a spec sheet and a feature list, confirm with us which motor configuration you are ordering before the machine is built into your bay plan — it takes one message and it decides what your electrician installs.

Whichever supply it runs on, the drive is a brushless AC motor with sealed electrical components. Brushless matters in a tire bay for a mundane reason: there are no brushes to wear out and no brush dust to accumulate, in a room that is already full of rubber particulate and lubricant mist. Sealed enclosures keep the same dust and moisture out of the wiring.

Clamping and capacity, in the numbers that matter

Internal rim clamping runs 9" - 30" (254 mm - 762 mm) and external rim clamping 9" - 26" (229 mm - 660 mm), with the adjustable, non-marring RimGuard clamps holding wheels across that span without marking them. Maximum tire diameter is 50" (1,270 mm).

Two capacities are easy to overlook and are worth checking against the work you actually do. Turntable tire width capacity for mounting is 4" - 15" (102 mm - 381 mm). Bead breaker tire width capacity for demounting is 1.5" - 13" (38 mm - 330 mm). Those are different ranges for different operations, and the demounting figure is the one that governs how wide a tire the breaker blade will take.

Bead breaking, seating and inflation

Bead loosening uses a large stainless-steel cylinder driven by bilateral pneumatic accelerators, so the blade moves at speed in both directions rather than dawdling on the return. The blade itself is multi-axis adjustable, which is what allows one setting regime to cope with fitments whose beads sit in quite different places. The bead-breaker arm is box-frame construction, chosen for stiffness under an off-centre load rather than for weight.

Seating is handled by the TurboBlast system: a single high-pressure burst of air between tire and rim, which seats a bead cleanly instead of encouraging the operator to improvise something dangerous. Inflation is hands-free through a foot-pedal inflator with a clip-on valve chuck, so both hands stay on the wheel. Industrial-grade die-cast zinc and aluminium control valves and kink-resistant high-pressure polyurethane tubing carry the air, which is the unglamorous half of why a pneumatic machine either keeps its speed for years or slowly loses it.

Protecting the wheel

The hardened steel mount/demount head has a micro-smooth face so the bead glides across it. For alloy, powder-coated and high-end rims there is a protective polymer head and a mounting head plastic protector kit included as standard — plus polymer covers and inserts for the RimGuard clamps and boots for the bead-breaker blade. That combination means every point where the machine touches a customer's wheel can be non-metallic. On a shop's most expensive comeback risk, having that kit in the crate rather than on a parts order is the practical difference.

Perfect for

  • Dedicated tire shops running volume on low-profile, run-flat and stiff-sidewall fitments.
  • Dealership and franchise service departments, where marking an alloy wheel is not an acceptable outcome.
  • Performance and custom wheel specialists handling large-diameter wheels with expensive finishes.
  • Busy general repair shops that want one machine to cover everything from a compact spare to a light-truck fitment.

Certification and compliance, stated honestly

The product data we hold for this machine claims no third-party safety listing, and we will not imply one on its behalf. Some insurers, fleet contracts and local jurisdictions require shop equipment that carries an independent test-house listing — issued by an outside laboratory, which is a different document from a manufacturer's own declaration of conformity. If that is a condition you have to satisfy, read what your paperwork actually asks for before you order, and ask us if you would like help matching the wording to a machine.

Shipping and delivery

This machine ships as freight within the lower 48 states. Unloading is arranged at your end — a forklift, a dock with a pallet jack, or a collection you make from the carrier's terminal — so settle which of those applies before the delivery is scheduled. Residential delivery is a separate service from a commercial dock and carries a residential fee, quoted live at checkout. Inspect the crate before you sign, and write any damage onto the bill of lading while the driver is present; a clean signature is extremely difficult to undo later.

Warranty

Coverage follows the manufacturer's published warranty document for this product, and we will send you the current version before you order if you ask for it. Do not strip a cylinder, valve or assist arm to investigate a fault before raising a claim — dismantling the component removes the evidence the claim is assessed on, and generally ends coverage on the very part you were trying to rescue.
