ROB17800C Multi-Refrigerant Recovery, Recycling and Recharging Machine

Almost every A/C service machine on the market is built around one refrigerant. This one is not, and that is the entire reason it exists. The ROB17800C recovers, recycles, evacuates and recharges a long list of refrigerants — and it does it in a single continuous process through one connection, rather than making a technician change machines, change hoses or change procedure depending on what is in the system.

That matters in exactly the places automotive machines are useless: mass transit systems, buses, refrigerated trailers, shipping containers and the rest of the non-R134a estate that no car dealership ever sees. If your equipment list runs across several refrigerants and generations, the choice is usually several machines or one that does not care. This is the second option.

What it will actually take

The machine handles R134a, R22, R404A, R407C and both medium- and high-pressure blends, and the full compatibility list runs to R12, R22, R134A, R401A, R401B, R402A, R402B, R404A, R407A, R407B, R407C, R410A, R500, R502 and R507. Put that machine into a mixed fleet and it stops being the constraint on what you can service — the technician's credentials and the parts supply become the limits, which is where they should be.

Worth saying plainly, because it decides the purchase: that breadth is what you are paying for. If every system you touch is automotive R-134a, a single-refrigerant machine will serve you better and cost less. Buy this one because your work is mixed.

Recovery speed: liquid and vapour, handled automatically

Recovery is rated at 0.5 lbs/min in vapour and 1 lb/min in liquid, and the machine switches between the two on its own during the cycle rather than waiting for the operator to decide. That automatic switch is what turns the liquid figure from a headline into a real saving: on a large charge, the bulk comes out as liquid at the higher rate and the machine drops back to vapour to finish, without anyone standing over it.

Evacuation is handled by a 5 CFM vacuum pump, which is sized to pull most systems down properly in preparation for a recharge rather than merely acceptably. Manual air purge removes non-condensable gases, and a vacuum leak-test function watches for pressure decay after evacuation so a system that will not hold is identified before it is filled with refrigerant.

The scale, the filter, and knowing what you put in

A built-in electronic scale does three jobs at once: it charges to the manufacturer's specification rather than to a gauge reading, it tracks how much refrigerant has been recovered, and it prevents the recovery tank being overfilled — which on a large system is a genuine safety matter, not a housekeeping one.

The heavy-duty filter is rated for up to 300 lbs of refrigerant and removes moisture and acid as it goes. Fully automated operation walks the technician through the sequence step by step and raises alerts when maintenance items fall due, specifically the filter drier and the vacuum pump oil. Automatic oil drain displays how much oil was pulled out during the service, so the right amount goes back rather than a guess, and integrated maintenance counters keep a running total of refrigerant recovered, refrigerant charged, and overall machine usage. A 4.3-inch colour display carries all of it, and an optional printer turns any of it into a service record.

Will It Fit?

The cabinet measures 47" x 26" x 30" and the machine weighs 230 lbs with the tank not included, so plan for a permanent parked position with room to work around it rather than a corner it gets wheeled into and forgotten. The 18 ft (5.5 m) hoses decide the real working envelope — that is how far the machine can sit from the service ports, which on a bus roof unit or a container is a more useful number than the footprint.

Power needs deciding before you order, and this is the one place the specification is genuinely ambiguous. It is published as 115VAC, 60Hz for the 17800C and 230VAC, 50Hz for the 17800C-230 — two different part numbers with two different supplies. This listing is the ROB17800C. Operating temperature is specified as 50°F to 105°F (11°C to 41°C), which rules out an unheated outbuilding in winter and a sun-facing yard in summer; siting it inside a conditioned workshop is not a nicety on this machine, it is within the stated range. The manufacturer's specification for this machine names one thing and one thing only: compliance with UL 1963 for refrigerant recovery and recycling equipment. We have quoted it exactly as the specification states it, and we are not going to add a second standard from what machines of this class "usually" carry. Note also what that compliance is about — it is a safety and performance standard for the equipment, not a statement about operator certification, and it does not replace the refrigerant-handling credentials your technicians are required to hold. If a tender, an insurer or a facilities policy asks for documentation beyond the specification sheet, ask us before you order and we will get it from the manufacturer in writing.

Shipping and Delivery

This is a freight shipment to the lower 48 states, not a parcel. At 230 lbs on a pallet you will need a dock, a forklift or a terminal collection arranged with the carrier — a two-person lift off a truck bed is not a realistic plan for this machine. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee, quoted live at checkout. Inspect the crate before the driver leaves and write any damage on the bill of lading at that moment: a clean signature is treated as a clean receipt, and concealed-damage claims on refrigerant equipment are difficult and slow.

Warranty
