Topdon T-Darts: Read the Chip and Identify the Remote's Frequency With One Tool
Automotive key work asks two separate questions about the same object, and most cheap tools answer only one. What transponder chip is inside this key, and what radio frequency does this remote transmit on? The T-Darts is built to answer both, and that combination — not the chip coverage on its own — is the reason it belongs in a key specialist's kit.
The value shows up in the order the work happens. Identify the chip and you know which key blank and which programming route apply. Identify the frequency and you know whether the remote in front of you is the right variant for the vehicle at all — the case where a key looks correct, cuts correctly, programs as a transponder, and then simply will not lock the doors. Answering both questions before you commit to a blank is what stops that afternoon happening.
Chip coverage, and what "100+" is worth
Coverage is stated at more than one hundred transponder chip types. On a key tool that number matters more than it does on most specifications, because chip identification is a lookup problem rather than a measurement problem: a chip the tool has never met is not read approximately, it is simply not read. Breadth is the feature.
It is worth being clear about what this device is and is not, though. It is an identification and testing instrument. The manufacturer positions it alongside the T-Ninja Pro, with which key programming for mainstream vehicles is performed — the pair is the working system, and the T-Darts is the diagnostic half of it. If you are buying this expecting it to program keys by itself, ask us first and we will point you at the right combination instead.
Frequency detection across the bands that matter
Radio frequency detection is quoted across four groups: 300-320; 430-434; 868, 902-915 Mhz. Those groups are not arbitrary — between them they cover the bands vehicle remotes are commonly built around in different regions, which is exactly the problem a workshop faces when a customer arrives with an imported vehicle, a spare bought online, or a key from a car that was originally sold somewhere else.
The practical use is blunt and immediate: hold the remote to the tool, press the button, and find out whether it is transmitting at all. A remote that transmits nothing has a battery, contact or board problem. A remote that transmits on the wrong frequency was never going to work on this car. Those are two completely different conversations with the customer, and guessing between them is how a shop ends up replacing a working remote.
Powered how you need it, where you need it
The T-Darts runs from USB or from batteries — the specification gives a Type-C USB port, and the copy states it can take four AAA cells. This is a small detail with a real consequence: a battery option means the tool works in a car park, at a roadside, or in a customer's driveway, where a bench-tethered device is useless. It also connects directly to phones and carries Bluetooth connectivity.
Will it fit how you work?
The unit is quoted at 139.5 × 72 × 28.2 mm (5.5 × 2.83 × 1.1 in) and 100g — a handheld, not a bench instrument. The standard detection range is stated as 1-10 cm, and that figure is worth reading carefully before you buy: this is a hold-it-against-the-key tool by design, not a device that sniffs a remote from across a workshop. For chip reading that is exactly what you want, since proximity is what makes the read reliable.
One honest note on that. The current marketing copy describes a "lengthened RF detection range" while the only range figure stated anywhere in the specification is the 1-10 cm standard detection range. Those two statements pull in different directions and we are not going to reconcile them by inventing a second number. The figure above is the one that is actually published; if a longer detection distance is central to how you intend to use the tool, ask us and we will confirm it against the manufacturer's documentation before you order.
Perfect For
- Automotive locksmiths and key specialists, where identifying the chip and the frequency is the first step of nearly every job.
- Shops already running a T-Ninja Pro — this is the companion the pairing is designed around.
- Mobile key services, where battery power means the tool works wherever the vehicle is.
- Used-car dealers and traders checking that the spare key handed over with a vehicle is genuine and functional before it is promised to a buyer.
- Independent garages that meet key problems occasionally and want to identify them rather than subcontract them blind.
What's in the Box
The specification establishes the tester with its Type-C USB port. We do not publish a fuller packing list — whether a USB cable, batteries, a case or printed documentation are included is not stated in the information we hold, and we will confirm it from the manufacturer's documentation on request rather than guess. Note in particular that we do not claim batteries are supplied.

Certification and compliance
No third-party safety listing or conformity scheme is published for this item in the information we hold, and nothing on this page should be read as claiming one. It is worth adding that radio equipment is regulated differently from workshop tools in many jurisdictions, and this page makes no statement at all about radio-equipment authorisation for the device in your country. If that matters to your business — and for a licensed locksmith it may — ask us and we will obtain the current manufacturer documentation before you commit to a purchase.
Delivery and pickup
This ships as a small parcel item within the lower 48 states, or you can collect it from the warehouse. This item ships free, so there is nothing to add at checkout. Check the package on arrival and note any damage on the delivery paperwork before signing — that note is what supports a claim later, and a clean signature is very hard to argue with afterwards.
Warranty
Terms and the claim process are published on our warranty claims page. No term is printed here because none is stated in the information we hold; ask before you order and we will confirm the current manufacturer position. If the tool fails, keep it as it is and contact us before opening the housing or changing the battery contacts. A unit that has been apart cannot be assessed, and a claim nobody can assess is refused on process rather than on merit.
