Description
Triumph NTC-950-1 and NTB-550: two machines whose helpers are levers
Read the spec sheets side by side and a theme appears. The NTC-950-1's headline feature is a pneumatic assist arm. The NTB-550's headline feature is a foot-pedal wheel brake. Its automatic data entry line reads No. Neither machine in this pair asks a processor to make a decision for the operator: both of them apply force where a pair of hands runs out, and leave the judgement to the person doing the job.
For a lot of shops that is the right shape of machine. There is less to configure, less to get out of calibration, and the two features you are paying for are the two that a fitter actually feels — something holding the bead, and something holding the wheel still.
Will It Fit?
Confirm all of this yourself before ordering; it is the part no supplier can check for you.
- Balancer footprint. 28 x 47 x 56 inches assembled (711mm x 1194mm x 1422mm) — small enough to live against a side wall.
- Changer working area. Leave clear floor on the operating side of the changer for the assist arm's travel and for a wheel to stand on edge while you work.
- Electrical supply. 110 volts, both machines, ordinary single-phase circuits.
- Air supply. The changer is pneumatic and rated to a maximum of 120 PSI. It needs a compressor, a regulator and a dry line, none of which come with it. No flow requirement is published in our data, so take that number from the manual.
- Access for the delivery. The changer's crate is 51 x 38 x 51 inches and 820 lbs; the balancer adds 325 lbs. About 1,145 lbs arrives in total. Measure the door and look for a step.
Where the assist arm pays for itself
A modern run-flat carries a sidewall stiff enough to support the vehicle with no air in it, and that stiffness is exactly what resists mounting. Every mount depends on getting one part of the bead into the drop centre of the rim while the head works the rest around, and a tyre that refuses to fold makes that a fight. The assist arm applies steady downward pressure and holds it, so the tyre stops arguing and the operator's hands stay on the tool. Wide-profile and short-sidewall performance tyres behave the same way.
The rest of the NTC-950-1 is straightforward commercial equipment: 5,500 lbs of bead-breaking force for wheels that arrive seized to the rim, the Jet Blast Inflator system to seat a bead with a hard burst of air during inflation, inside clamping of 16-28 inches, outside clamping of 14-26 inches, wheels to 15 inches wide and tyres to 43 inches in diameter, all driven by a 1 1/2 HP motor.
The pedal, and the three numbers you type
The NTB-550's brake is operated by foot, which is the detail worth understanding. Weights go on a wheel that wants to rotate under the pressure of your hand, and chasing it costs both time and precision. A foot pedal locks it without taking a hand out of the job — a small mechanical idea that survives being used a hundred times a week.
What this balancer does not do is fill in its own set-up figures. Rim width, rim diameter and offset are all entered by the operator, on every wheel. That is a real difference from the automatic-entry balancer in the range, and it is the honest reason this pairing costs less. If your volume is moderate, it is a keystroke. If you are balancing all day, price the other one. Measurement quality is not what changes: +/-1 gram, a 6-9 second cycle, wheels of 10-28 inches, tyres to 44 inches, rim widths of 1 1/2-20 inches, up to 150 lbs on a 36 mm shaft, standard or metric display.
Perfect For
- Independent repair shops whose tyre work is steady rather than constant, and who want the hard fitments handled properly.
- Rural and mobile-support workshops, where a machine with fewer electronic dependencies is easier to keep in service.
- Owner-operators working alone, for whom the assist arm and the pedal are effectively a second pair of hands.
- Any shop on single-phase power — both machines are 110 volt.
What's in the Box
With the changer: metal and plastic demount heads, plastic wheel clamp covers, a tyre iron, and a lube bucket with brush.
With the balancer: a plastic safety hood, a quick-release wing nut, cone adapters, a wheel weight hammer, and a rim caliper.
Not included: the compressor, the air line, the electrical connection.

Certification, stated plainly
Our records for this pair show no third-party safety listing, and we will not dress that up. It is irrelevant to most private and independent buyers. It becomes relevant when an insurer, a fleet policy or a local inspector requires a named listing before equipment can be put to work. If that describes you, ask us before you order — we will request the manufacturer's current documentation in writing so you are deciding on paper, not on a product page.
Shipping and delivery
Both machines travel as freight within the lower 48 states. Your rate is calculated live at checkout from your own address, so it reflects what carriers charge today rather than what they charged when this page was written. Unloading falls to the receiver: a forklift, a dock, or a collection from the freight terminal, which is frequently the easiest route for a workshop without a machine to lift a crate. Delivery to a residential address adds a residential fee, shown at checkout.
Do not sign for freight you have not looked at. Write any damage on the bill of lading while the driver is present, photograph the crates from several angles, and keep the paperwork. A clean signature is very hard to walk back.
Warranty
Ask us for the manufacturer's current warranty document before you order if the terms will influence your choice; we would rather hand you the document than describe it. Regardless of what it covers, do not take a failed motor, cylinder or valve apart before the claim is open. A dismantled component reads as a modified one to almost every manufacturer, and cover is lost with it. Photograph the fault, record the serial number, and call us first.
