A truck balancer that still knows what to do with an alloy wheel

Heavy-duty balancers are usually built for one job: a steel truck rim, clip-on weights, standard mode, done. The Tuxedo WB-448 carries the full set of alloy programs alongside it — ST plus AL1, AL2, AL3 and AL4 — which is the difference between a machine that balances your commercial wheels and a machine that balances everything that comes through the door. The AL modes exist because a wheel with no lip to clip a weight onto has to be corrected with adhesive weights placed on hidden inner surfaces, and each mode describes a different geometry for where those planes sit. Without them, an alloy is balanced by guesswork or sent out.

The second thing worth knowing before the specifications: it is self-calibrating with self-diagnosis. Calibration on a balancer is not optional maintenance — an out-of-calibration machine confidently reports numbers that are wrong, and the customer comes back with a vibration you have already been paid to fix. A machine that calibrates itself and reports its own faults is a machine that stays honest without a service visit.

Will it work in your shop?

• Power: 220V, 20 Amp, single phase. Have an electrician confirm the circuit before delivery rather than on the day.
• Air. The pneumatic wheel lift on this machine runs on shop air. The required working pressure range is given in the manual — check it against what your compressor actually holds under load, not the number printed on the tank.
• Space and access. Allow room to roll a commercial wheel to the machine and to stand at the display while the shaft spins. The unit ships at 650 lbs, so check the floor and the route to its final position, and whether a pallet truck can reach it.

Confirming the supply and the space is the buyer's responsibility, and it is far cheaper to establish with a tape measure and a look at the panel than with a truck waiting outside.

A loaded truck wheel is a genuine manual-handling hazard, and the pneumatic wheel lift on this design exists to take that lift away from the technician's back: the wheel is rolled on, raised and presented to the shaft rather than hoisted onto it. If the wheel lift is the reason you are buying the WB-448, ask us to confirm in writing whether it is included in your shipment before you place the order. We will get the answer from Tuxedo. This is exactly the sort of thing that turns into an argument on delivery day, and a question asked now costs nothing.

What it will take, and what it will do with it

The machine handles a maximum wheel diameter of 47″ (1,194 mm) at up to 298 lbs of wheel weight — that is the specification that puts it in truck territory rather than car. Rim widths from 1.5″ to 20″ (508 mm maximum) and rim diameters from 10″ to 24″ (610 mm maximum) cover the range from a light passenger wheel to a heavy commercial one on the same shaft, which is the practical case for a mixed shop.

Data entry is by keypad, with balance results reported to 1 gram. Car and truck cones are standard, so you are not immediately buying an adapter set to make the machine usable on the vehicles you already service. A foot brake gives you a manual stop — useful for holding the wheel while you place a weight, and reassuring when something needs to stop now rather than at the end of a spin cycle.

The details that matter after the novelty wears off are the ones about where things go. Weight storage is built in, so the assortment lives on the machine instead of migrating around the bay. Worth being precise about the difference: a manufacturer stating that a machine is built to a standard is not the same document as an outside body having examined and listed it, and insurers, corporate safety programmes and some local jurisdictions ask specifically for the latter. If a requirement like that governs your workshop, get it in writing from whoever imposes it and send it to us before you order — we would rather answer the question honestly in advance than have equipment arrive that your own inspection will refuse.

Shipping and delivery

Shipped by freight within the lower 48, priced live at checkout against your address so the figure is current rather than a stale number in a description. You need to be able to unload it — a forklift with the capacity, or a dock — or you can arrange collection from the carrier's local terminal instead. A residential address carries a residential fee, shown before you pay.

Inspect it on the tailgate. Check the crate, the shaft, the display housing and the guard for damage, write anything you see on the delivery receipt before signing, photograph the shipment as it comes off, and contact us that day. Freight damage is settled with the carrier rather than under warranty, and a receipt signed clean closes most of that door. Unpack and check the contents against the parts list promptly too — the window for reporting a missing item or concealed damage is short.
