Description
Victron Battery Balancer
Equalises Series-Connected 12V Batteries | For 24V & 48V Systems
The Victron Battery Balancer (model BBA000100100) is an essential device designed to optimise the performance and lifespan of battery banks utilising series-connected 12V batteries. In 24V or 48V systems, small differences in individual battery characteristics can lead to voltage imbalances, causing some batteries to overcharge and others to undercharge. This imbalance significantly shortens the overall battery bank's service life and reduces its effective capacity.
This intelligent balancer actively monitors the voltage across series-connected 12V batteries. When the charge voltage of a 24V system exceeds approximately 27V, the balancer activates, drawing a current of up to 1A from the battery with the highest voltage. This action ensures that all batteries within the series string converge to the same state of charge, preventing premature degradation and maximising the efficiency of your solar, off-grid, or backup power system.
SYSTEM NOTE: Designed for 12V batteries in 24V or 48V series configurations. Not for individual cell balancing.

Battery System Integration
The Victron Battery Balancer is designed for straightforward integration into various battery systems:
| System Configuration | Balancer Requirement |
|---|---|
| 24V Battery Bank (two 12V batteries in series) | One Battery Balancer is required. |
| 48V Battery Bank (four 12V batteries in series) | Three Battery Balancers are required, one across each adjacent pair. |
| Larger Parallel Strings | Multiple balancers can be connected in parallel to increase balancing current. |
For enhanced monitoring, the Battery Balancer can be used in conjunction with a Victron BMV-702 battery monitor, which offers a midpoint monitoring function to track voltage deviation and trigger independent alarms.
Typical Applications
| Application Area | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Off-Grid Solar Systems | Ensures the longevity and reliable performance of battery banks in remote power setups. |
| Marine & RV Applications | Maintains balanced power for leisure vehicles and mobile systems, extending battery life on the go. |
| Backup Power Systems | Enhances the reliability and readiness of emergency power supplies. |
| Industrial Battery Banks | Optimises performance and extends the service life of larger, critical battery installations. |
Built-In Protection Functions
The Victron Battery Balancer is equipped with essential safeguards to ensure reliable operation and system protection. It includes built-in over-temperature protection to prevent damage from excessive heat. Additionally, an alarm relay is integrated, which triggers when the voltage deviation between battery legs exceeds 200mV. This normally open relay (60V / 1A) can be connected to an external alarm system, providing timely notification of significant imbalance issues. The alarm can be reset via dedicated terminals.
Common Questions
What is the primary purpose of a battery balancer?
A battery balancer equalises the state of charge of series-connected batteries, preventing voltage imbalances that can lead to overcharging or undercharging of individual batteries. This helps to extend the overall lifespan and performance of the battery bank.
How many Victron Battery Balancers are needed for a 48V system?
For a 48V battery bank constructed from four series-connected 12V batteries, three Victron Battery Balancers are required. Each balancer is placed across an adjacent pair of 12V batteries.
What types of batteries is this balancer suitable for?
The Victron Battery Balancer is designed for 12V lead-acid batteries (including AGM, Gel, and flooded types) connected in series to form 24V or 48V systems. Some sources also indicate suitability for advanced lithium power systems, particularly LiFePO4 batteries, to resolve block-to-block drifting issues.
Can multiple balancers be used together?
Yes, multiple Victron Battery Balancers can be connected in parallel across a single battery pair to increase the effective balancing current, which can be beneficial for larger parallel battery strings.
Installation Notes
- Professional installation by a qualified electrician or solar installer is highly recommended to ensure safety and correct operation.
- Always ensure correct polarity when connecting the balancer to your battery bank to prevent damage.
- Mount the unit in a dry, well-ventilated area, protected from direct sunlight and moisture.
- For certain compliance requirements (e.g., UL), it may be necessary to fuse the negative, positive, and midpoint connections near the batteries with appropriate DC fuses (e.g., 10A).
- Refer to the official Victron Energy manual for detailed wiring diagrams and specific installation instructions.
Before You Buy
- Confirm your battery bank consists of series-connected 12V batteries. This balancer is designed for 12V battery pairs.
- Verify your total system voltage (e.g., 24V or 48V) to determine the correct number of balancers required for your setup.
- Consider the overall capacity and type of your batteries to ensure compatibility and optimal balancing performance.
- Consult the Victron Energy product documentation for comprehensive technical specifications and compatibility details relevant to your specific application.
Always verify product specifications and compatibility with your existing system components before purchase. Information is subject to change without notice.
